I believe there is an ambient light sensor that controls the dashboard lighting for the speed/rev counter dial, mine in daylight shows no illumination at all which is a problem on dull days or going through tunnels the only time it lights up is if the sidelights are turned on, so is mine faulty if so where is it hidden
 
It's integral with the instrument cluster unit. If you switch the headlights on in daylight and then block light from the dial (e.g. by cupping your arms around it or similar), you can get the dial illumination to come on.

Note that the dial will only be illuminated if the headlights are switched on.
Sounds like a typical Italian way of doing things, so on a dull day you need to switch all the lights on to be able to read the speedo :cool:
