I had to replace my CV boots. I bought some of the "proper" ones (i.e. the ones specific to the van) and one of the pneumatic stretching tools, but discovered that these proper boots don't really stretch enough over the cv housing.

So i bought some universal boots, used the stretching tools and installed the boots.

2 miles later i had a couple of holes in one.

So i bought some other boots from a different vendor and decided to go a stage further and remove the CV joint.

So that is what i did. Removed the cv joint, cleaned it all up, popped the cable-tie-over-the-circlip, popped the boot on the shaft, refitted the cv joint and packed if full of grease.

And then i thought i would JUST slip the boot over the housing and pop on the clips to hold them in place.

But i can't get the wide end of the boot over the housing. It is now covered in grease after my attempts. I have tried to see if i could use the pneumatic tool on the wide end, but that doesn't work (the housing stops the tool from making a small enough circle and anyway even if i did get it on, all the grease would make it slide off).

I suspect the issue is that i need a boot with a wider end, so unless anyone has any tips, i will have to cut this boot off and buy a wider one. That's a shame, as i can see that if i was able to get it on, it would be a nice fit.

so, any tips on how to get the greasy wide end over the housing gratefully received.

Yes specific van boots not stretchy and require joint removal to fit.

Skf brand stretch boots are very good and work with pneumatic tool.

When fitted make sure the bellows of the boot don't rub together when turning left /right or they will wear through .

Did you measure the diameter of the new boot compared with the CV joint, if it is only a small difference then clean your hands and persevere, if it is miles out then you got the wrong boot kit. The Maxi vans with 16 inch wheels have larger CV joints I recall.
Also some joints have grooves that don't line up with the inside of all types of CV boot so check that too.
Also I have worked on gen 2 Ducato Maxi vans with plastic boots that use a metal band to secure. What did you originally take off the van?
