Crunch and Grind!

Hey there

Is there a common reason why a Gearbox would Crunch/Grind when the engine is cold? (ie First start of the day)

Is there a different reason it would only happen in one gear when cold and not all of them?

Do Gearboxes have oil pumps?

all gearboxes are a niusance when cold.

my stilo takes a bit more force to get into 1st first thing in the morning. all the other gears seem a little bit clunky to get into as well. i take it it is because the gearbox has to be warmed up for a few minutes.

after 2 or 3 minutes i cant fault it though as the gearbox seems smooth as a whistle (not as smooth as a focuses though)

What sort of gearbox do you have?

A 5 Speed Tipo Gear Box.

It has them Solid Metal Links that move about when you jiggle the Gear Stick.

i will be honest and say that i know nothing much about gearboxes.

but all the cars gearboxes that i have driven have been quite clunky/un precise when cold and get better as they warm up

Likewise for me (Dualogic) - it likes chucking fits when its cold

I don't think they have pumps, but would imagine you would need to let the gears circulate the oil for a bit when it has been started in the mornings. Could check the level?

Spot on and many gearboxes are pigs when cold ..and when the oil warms up their fine ..also if the tipo has many linkages these can ware as well and not help the situation ..Nice tipo for sale in the classifieds to ..just thought I would mention that one

So are we talking about the quantity, or temperature of the oil? Or both?

as your car gets older possibly quantity.

but i havent checked the quantity on the stilo.

you should notice if there isnt much gearbox fluid left, trust me

it gets checked at every service

Could be as Dave has said the lack of oil present in the first place and the quality will pay some roll but not to the same degree ..The thing with gear boxes is ..as they are not that accessible and easy to check people tend to ignore the fact they also need looking after ..I always drain and replenish the gearbox oil on every car I have owned at around the 30K miles mark ..look after it and it and it will last many miles and should give you trouble free motoring ..

Well for me that rules out quantity - I've had problems from almost day one

My old GTV had a little crunch into 2nd gear from cold, fine once warm. I blamed the former owner. Isn't it generally related to low oil or people crunching the box, or generally just abusing it causing wear?

I have changed the oil a few times during my owner ship. Its just hard because I can't do it myself as I don't have a verticle pump.

Can you flush Gearboxes like you can Flush an Engine?

if in all gears then its due to wrong grade or amount of oil, or simply the oil has not circulated yet. a gearbox is often notchy in winter, especially for the first few changes on a cold morning. add some good quality oil and some molylube or slick50 (or like me add both) and you'll notice a huge difference.

if only crunches going into 1 gear it is always the synchromesh. time to replace gearbox. let me guess, its 2nd gear?

OK will do that or ask for it to be done.

Yes it is second BUT I had the gearbox rebuilt less then 3 years ago and 2nd gear was the one I told them to "concentrate" on.

It goes away once warm but it can be a long ting waiting for it to warm up for that long especially when in a hurry.

With todays Technology and OLD school Technology being so different, you never know Although I've never read anything like that, maybe I missed that page.
