I've always wondered a few things about the cruise control system - anyone know anything about how cruise work please?

* When I reduce the speed rapidly it feels as if the brake is being applied - is this so, and if so do the brake lights come on?
* Also what would happen if I tried to make the car go up and impossible gradient, i.e. by leaving it on cruise in too high a gear and then going uphill? I'm curious as to how hard the system will rev the engine before giving up.

Sorry for the daft questions, I pulled off a slip road the other day and went to disable the cruise control and turned the lights on instead without realizing!

I just like to know how stuff like this works. Thanks.

ECU controlled, does not apply brakes but will induce engine braking and open throttle flap/fuel metering to increase speed.

Never tried steep incline in high gear, I would assume it would stall or disconnect the cruise control...think i'll try it one day:)

I've had the Bravo pulling up some serious gradients with cruise control on, it'll just keep adding throttle until it flattens out or stalls but because it stalled i can tell if it disconnected or not, also if memory serves me right it disconnects below a certain speed and RPM.
You said about turning the cruise control off, if you touch your break or clutch it disconnects automatically doesn't it?

Thanks for the replies chaps.

Yep, I ought to brake really but I'm a sucker for pulling off the motorway and turning it off via the master ring lever, the coasting gently to a halt. Of course, if you turn the lights on instead this results in sudden heavy braking and random flashing of other road users.

yes or the throttle, 30mph is the speed from memory it can operate from.

On a Croma 2005 touching the throttle does NOT turn Cruise Control off. I can lift the speed of the car say to overtake and when do just release the throttle and the car settles back to current/last cruise speed setting.

Thats the same as the Stilo.

If you set the CC to 60mph on the motorway and press the throttle to overtake someone, when you remove your foot from the throttle the car will settle back to the original set speed of 60mph, it does not switch off the CC like pressing the brake or clutch does.
