Hi all, I have just purchased a 2005 Fiat Croma, I was hoping someone may be able to help me with some advice. The cruise control does not always work, (mostly not) the garage has changed the switch by the clutch but still does not work, has anybody had the same problem? Also when running the car at about 30-35 mph mosty in 3rd and 4th gear the engine misses/shudders for a few seconds as I give the car a bit of throttle to keep up speed, the garage said they replaced a air hose or something like that. and lastly the power steering has failed twice only for a second or two while driving off. When you say 'driving off' is it just after starting the car, or does it happen if the engine has been running for a while as well?

Power steering problems have been associated with low battery voltage. This can also affect other systems.
See if they will test your alternator charging and battery voltage, condition etc. Other option is to get these tests done (usually free) at a battery supplier. If either are defective then hopefully the supplying garage will replace F.O.C.

This was why I was asking about whether it only happened after starting the engine. This is when battery voltage would be at its lowest.
Good to see that two of us have had the same initial thought.
BTW if it is your alternator there is a supplier in Germany selling new ones for around £70. That is far cheaper than anything you will get in the UK.

s130 is spot on, as is Radlet6. The judder could be either EGR valve or MAF sensor. A clean should sort EGR and Maf problem.Only other cause would be Bosch airflow meter. All the above are covered in various parts of this Forum

Thank you to all that have replyed, I will let the garage know in the morning, the power steering failed when I took the car up the road about 1/2 a mile then stopped the car to go into the shop, when I started the car and just drove off the steering failed stright away for a second or 2.
Sounds like the alternator. Have it tested like S130 suggested.
Re-Posted for replys: The sales garage still has my car, (they have had it longer than me now) make's me think weather I sould try to get my money back, it's a 2005 model 65000 miles on the clock and I paid £4995.00. They took it to a fiat dealer, they have been waiting for days for a new steering wiring loom which they claim is the problem for the power steering failer and not the alternator like most of you have suggested, which I have told the car sales man that I don't think it's the wiring loom that is the problem. As for the cruise control they have replaced the clutch switch and now the brake switch, not sure if this will work also as I told the sales person I would have thought the green light on the dash would still work?
