I feel much better looking at these pictures that the cabin of these cars are super tough. If you look at the pictures the cabin area looks very safe in an event of an accident.

I think you need some new glasses, the black one has suffered quite a bit of damage to the A pillar. It's not a deathtrap but if you get hit by a nice big strong truck like the new F150 then I wouldn't be quite so confident.

To be fair though, if you look closely, the van has come off worse!
 
Whilst it might appear from the pictures that the occupants of the black 500 may have survived massive intrusion into the cabin by the white van, you should be aware of the internal damage the human body can suffer from sudden vehicle deceleration. Injuries can include blunt force trauma to the brain and aorta. If a vehicle hits another vehicle head on as would appear in that particular picture, I wager that the deceleration is going to pretty massive and no matter how good the safety cell built into the vehicle, or how many airbags it may have, life threatening injuries would be a considered possibilty even if there is no obvious external injury. Clearly unless evidence is available of how the occupants fared in those crashes, we have no idea what injuries they suffered and whether they survived or not.

He said it was clear that the passenger cabins were practically undamaged, the a pill are door separating is a major thing.
 
This is a complex problem but those of you interested it boils down to the Newtonian Force = Mass * Acceleration equation. So car crumple zones are designed to deform at an even, progressive rate, getting increasingly stronger the closer to the passenger cell you get. That's why a minor shunt can end up so expensive. A small car hitting a bull bar on truck would hope to bounce off with minimal force exerted on the passenger cell in any one direction and will look completely destroyed if all went as you would hope. This allows the most time for the internal parts of the car, and the bodily organs of those parts, to change directions / stop as gracefully as possible. Fatal bodily intrusion aside, the more crumple the better. Rather crushed legs than a severed spine. Be aware of this when reviewing euro ncap results.

I thought that's what air bag did to reduce and soften the head and spinal impact?

Today's airbags are excellent bits of kit that can dramatically and very effectively reduce injuries associated through impact, there is no doubt about that. As I understand it, during a sudden rapid deceleration, the brain can move (possibly violently) and effectively be bashed inside the skull which could result in serious injury. Quite how effective airbags are preventing that from happening, I have no idea.

As previously mentioned, the safety cell in modern cars is designed to progressively limit the impact and deceleration forces inflicted upon a vehicle's occupants, but of course no two human beings will necessarily have the same tolerance relating to traumatic sudden impacts. Age, build and fitness levels would I suspect play a significant part in any outcome.

Crash test dummies don't have fragile internal organs, despite the huge amount of money they cost!
 
The g sensors in the dummies will be able to simulate internal injuries though.

The seatbelt mounting points are designed to peel away in a controlled manner which limits the peak load on the occupants.

I appreciate the dummies have very expensive sensors but I would be more interested to see the effect on a cadaver rather than a crash test dummy.
 
Well they will know how many g it takes to rip an aorta from your heart, do x amount of brain damage.
 
Don't like the look of the second last one with jaws of life been used to cut it up. :-/
