Technical Crank Crank!!

driving my car from work the othe night and as i turned left i heard a loud CRANK CRANK sound. sounded like two cogs rubbing against eachother the wrong way. after that i heard it through all the gears, so i had to put my hazards on and roll home. sent my dad to have a look and he said after the loud CRANKING sound it will drive ok through the rest of the gear until you change it to a different one then CRANKS then its ok. i thought it was my gearbox but he said it sound like the drive shaft. Any ideas? and i it is the drive shaft how much will it cost?

well i got it to a garage and he said its the diff in the gearbox. he sent it to a gearbox specialist and that he wont know the full amount till monday. does anyone know who much im looking at paying from experiance?

well i went to the garage today and he said i need a new gearbox so. does anyone where i could get one from or a fiat breakers in the midlands. its for my 1.6 active sport.
