Hello, for my coursework I've got to do a report on the radio sector of the media industry, I'm trying to compare the difference between radio stations local to me (Dorset), nation wide, and from up north (UK wise), however I dont know of any radio stations apart from ones local to me.

Is anyone able to name a couple of radio stations that are just avaliable for your area? (For example, not BBC Radio 1 etc).

Thank you :)

Edit - Also, in the UK, TV / Radio OFCOM, ASA and RAJA (I think RAJA is for radio, not checked yet), is this the same world wide? Or if the station is based in the UK, they have them, but if they are based in France they have different ones?

youll find many radio stations although they are local are part of a chain.
Alot of people have a radio station thats similar to radioone, mines call metro radio. i no the one in sheffield is hallam fm. I also have galaxy... plays dance music and then magic which is for the old ppl!

Metro Radio 97.1FM - Newcastle
Century FM - 101.8FM - Newcastle
Sun FM - 103.4FM - Sunderland

they are commercial stations in the north east. Most of the others are usually BBC or some other crap like Smooth radio.

They are not particularly good.

West Midlands: BRMB, Beacon, Wolf, Heart (the original and best of the Heart stations (y)) and that dodgy one that plays old music, the name will come back to me :bang:

Stafford/ Stoke: Signal

Cumbria: CFM (part of the Big City network)

Dumfries: Westsound

Aberdeen: Northsound 1 and 2

Plus the BBC local ones of course.

Depends what you mean by north of Dorset? Does Midlands come into that? Or do you mean north north like leeds or manchester?

Yeah Midlands is up north for me  Dorset (Well, not all of it, but the part I am) is on the south coast.

And thank you for all the replys :)

My local is mix 96 (96.2 fm) which boasts about being local radio etc - but only because the broadcasting authority won't allow anyone else to set up as they feel the area is well served by this crap station.
The station is part of a larger concern (drive from Aylesbury to h. Wycombe, as you lose Mix you can then pick up wycombe radio & hear the same song repeated about a minute later.
During the day they constantly bombard you with reminders to ring up their premium rate competition line to win £10K or a new car etc.

Come teatime the station then hands over to the national linkup & the presenters start taking calls from all over the UK (and they talk a load of dross with very little music played) - and there's more competitions. It is very wrong but broadcasting authority seem to think there's nothing wrong with this scenario!
As it is, I never listen to the radio, I just play CDs or MP3s.

Hallam and Magic were part of the EMAP group. They sold their 40ish stations to the German Bauer group..
