Hi i have a 20v turbo and have an issue with it blowing smoke out the back some times when i stop at lights, its oil and if i keep my foot on the fun pedal so its idling at 1500 it doesnt do it but when i lift off loads come out the back,
have just bought a catch tank to see if running breather pipes into it gets rid of the problem but need advice as to why this might be happening?
When it does it its propper james bond smoke screen style.

Help

could be the oil rings. my turbo cinq did it but it stopped once i fitted another engine I rebuilt. the old engine, altho i rebuilt it i used old piston rings (dont ask)

ALSO we once fitted larger cc forged pistons in a bike engine. except the machinist bored the cylinders out to big. after a couple of hundred miles the bike smoked at idle just like my car did.

but my guess is it will be something to do with rings or bores.
a compression test both wet and dry will show any problems

Hiya, Iv'e a 20v turbo Coupe and mine started smoking at idle when the engine was warm......my problem was the turbo had passed its day.
Bought a recon one from turbo technics for under 500quid and thats with a 2year warranty. So i suggest you check breather pipes and get a compression test done like ya said but also check the turbo too just incase.

You turbo is most likely on its way out i'm afraid.

Depending on how much smoke, I would suggest avoid driving if its heavy as it can quite quickly leave you out of oil.

Your looking at a bill of around £500 for the repair

There isnt any smoke at all when i boot it or any thing and it doesnt matter weather its warm or cold, the turbo was replaced just befor i bought the car and has only done 14k since? might still be under warente. will have some testes done and see what i find i think

Turbo oil seals gone, standard coupe issue.

You haven't got a decat exhaust or sports cat fitted? If you have the lack of back pressure from this will cause the same problem.

im 100% its your turbo!

best way to check is remove the black inlet pipe attached to the compressor housing (MAKE SURE TURBO IS COLD) and wiggle the turbo blades and you will be able to feel the play in the impella blades!
