My Uno has an interesting problem. Sometimes and only sometimes the engine will 'pink' badly when pulling under load, ie, on a hill or when pulling away hard in traffic. Could this be the ignition module? Some days it wont happen at all, other days it happens a lot. I've changed plugs, check timing with a strobe but it still happens. I'm thinking it might be the module as it seems to give problems on the Uno, or so I've read on the forums here. Doe anyone have any ideas please?
Thanks.

What type of fuel are you using, we have probs over here as our fuel is very week 92 ron i think, it says on my golf gti fuel flap dont use anything apart from 98 and you have to adjust your timing to suit the lower grade fuel! Ant!

92ron?! in manchester?! what are they mixing it with? water!!!

try a bit of wynns "dry fuel" in the tank, i had similair issues with condensation in teh tank of a 70sx, followed by a bit of carb cleaner, seemed to be fine after that

Well - maybe the fuel is also a little 'variable' in South Africa? But I presume you are getting inconsistent behaviour even on the same tank of fuel?

Perhaps the ignition advance mechanism is sticking inside the distributor.

I did have an odd case where the ignition module was randomly advancing the timing. But I think that's unlikely. If it was, you'd notice the idle speed fluctuating.

Thanks everyone for your help.
The fuel we have here is 95 octain unleaded. I think it must be the distributor or ignition module because the idle goes up and down sometimes and will even cutout completely. I think I'll have to change the whole distributor. As this is the only problem I've had with the car in four years of ownership it's not bad going!
