Hi All.
Just re-entered the boxy world of Panda thanks to buying a red 92 1000 CLX recently off fleabay. I say re-entering as we have had 2 previously, back in the 80's; a 1981 beige 903 Comfort(?) that we loved more than any car should be, only replaced by a red 98 "Sport"(?) 1000, that we also loved, except for the low profile tyres/sports wheels that ruined the handling and comfort, imho.
We took the 81 around south of France, wild camping, 3000 miles in 3 weeks and only needed to change the clutch cable (on the side of the road) - and we had one of those in the "service pack" the garage had given us before we set off (with the words; "you're braver than I would be"! - it was pretty rusty and beaten up by then, to be fair). Turned out that the clutch cable thing was a fault as they chafed going through the bulkhead, from memory.
Anyhoo, forward 25 years and although a van family (old Merc Sprinter), wanted a city car for kids taxi and easier parking, so were looking at Vauxhall Agilas, etc, before coming across a Panda on fleabay and having an epiphany. To be honest, I thought they were all dead by now; apparently not!
So, we now have a practical, cheap, joyful and quirky little car, and delighted to have it.
But...(And now for the small print)
Having been garaged for 10 years, it needs a good service. Carb service (maybe strip), brake overhaul and steering looking at, as it seems way too heavy, despite now having new tyres today.
Questions: 1/.I remember the other 1000 having a "pinking" (fast rattle )noise sometimes, under acceleration, and this one def does, (although it's getting a bit better the more it's driven) - is this attributable to something specific, or just a case of making sure carbs/points/plugs, etc are properly set up and adjusted?
2/. The 92 seems to have been a cusp year for brake types, as there are several variations listed for the Panda 100, and warnings about ordering the right pads and shoes. Is it just a case of waiting for the log book to come and then using chassis/engine numbers to order, or is there another way?
Thanks to all, in anticipation.
Chris
