Now this could be seen as a bit of a rant but with it being the new year and all i know i can look forward to the annual death of the ducatos cooling fans this time only lasted 95000 kms and low and behold it hasn't let me down i think Fiats planned obsolescence of its parts is commendable and must make them a hell of alot of money whilst we are busy fixing them up again.Anyways i rang my friendly Fiat dealer and got a price and availability on said part knowing i couldn't buy just the pancake motors individually and would have to buy the complete setup shrouds and all and was told yes we've had a run on them but we have one in stock (wonders never cease) and if id like to give them $710 +GST they would happily send one out to me on my chosen carrier (another $45 ) so im looking at about shelling out $755 for parts that are more than likely to fail again next xmas .What to do?
Like many ive heard the stories how these electric motors arent repairable if they were they would happily sell me parts remember Fiat knows best yadda yadda yadda
So over a quiet beer or three i pulled one down and saw the problem in the back of the housing is an olive shaped bush in a self centering housing all made of light weight tin foil and its in this bush that lies the problem it wears which then lets the windings short out on the housing causing the ever faithful check engine light to come on ,blow the 40 amp fuse and to rub it all in make the existing fan run on after engine shut down (yes its old news to me replaced 5 sets all up now)
I took an old housing or three to a local engineering firm and said can you make me a new bush to slot in to my amazement he said no why waste your time i can make you a better solution leave it with me .4 days later i picked it up bushing is now longer and greasable firmly attached to the housing cost me $75 fits up works and i have the satisfaction of paying less and receiving more .Ill post some pics when i work out how to get them out of my phone Cheers Adam
