Hi

Just finished putting my X250 2007 2.3 Ducato Maxi back together after doing the headgasket (which didn't need doing!!! it was the EGR cooler which had failed causing the coolant to get into the oil)

Took for a quick spin and after approx. 4 miles the temp gauge shot of the scale and red warning light lit up as well, the expansion bottle was pressurising, fans had both kicked in but after approx. 30 seconds gauge had dropped back to normal and after another minute fans had stopped

Took back home and tried bleeding the system again in case it was air locked but it's still doing the same? I know the thermostat is OK as I have fitted a new one on the rebuild. Are the Ducato's notoriously difficult to bleed the cooling system? I had the heater on full and set to hot and followed the instructions on the elearn for the Ducato

Anyway has anybody got a piping diagram for all the cooling pipework on the engine as I just wont to make sure I've got everything back together correctly

Thanks in advance
Carl

Hi Carl, I don't think bleeding is especially difficult. I just re-routed my cooling system via the water heater of the shower without bleeding problems.

Are the fans kicking in around the right temperature or is the sensor possibly the culprit?

Yeah fans kick in just after needle goes above half way, and gauge steadily rises so I assume the temp sensor is fine

Update

When I got in from work went out and bleed the system again, Didn't take it for a drive just did it on tick over and revving to 3000 rpm as instructed on the elearn disc, Took approx. 15 minutes to reach half way stage on the gauge then another minute or so once gauge crept above half way fan kicked in and run for a couple of minutes

Continued for another 15 minutes on tick & revving to 3000 rpm and gauge never went above half way so fingers crossed it was just an air lock?

Run out of time tonight so I will take the van for a spin tomorrow just to make sure it is OK

Been for a spin yet?

B*ll*cks its still doing the same when driving?

Took for a drive tonight temp steadily rose after approx. three miles and seemed to remain steady at half way then after another mile or so rose to the top of the gauge but after 5 seconds dropped back to half way

Continued driving and after another couple of minutes gauge back to the top so pulled over checked expansion bottle which was full and gurgling away (expansion bottle just below max when cold) fans were running and gauge dropped back to normal after approx. 30 seconds???

So guys any ideas greatly appreciated

Carl

Hooray finally got it sorted, turned out the water pump was knackered so been it touch with the supplier and they sent me another one FOC

Just spent four hours today changing the water pump just glad to get it finally sorted

Impellor spinning on drive shaft when it gets hot...I would hazard a guess

Impeller had actually sheared off main shaft so guessing it was a flaw in the manufacture but guess they will try to blame the fitting of the pump, just sent old pump back so will wait and see what they say

Main thing is the over heating has been sorted
