General Considering a mk2 Ulysse

Hi, I'm considering a Ulysse. Looking to spend £1500 ish on a people carrier and have seen a few mk2s around this price bracket.

I've read all the horror stories but somehow I'm still tempted

I do over 20k a year so am thinking a JTD may be the way forward.

I want at least 6 seats and there's nothing else in the price range that appeals to me. I don't want a Galaxy/Sharan/Zafira

I'm quite handy with a spanner and don't mind doing bits and pieces myself but with the miles I do I need something that will get me there.

Anyone want to talk some sense into me Would I be better off with a Multipla?

Surely there's someone here who has one that's been relatively reliable and they love it?

We have a petrol 2004 ulysse, been very reliable with 123000 miles on the clock.
Only problems to date are indicator bulbs arcing out where they fit inside holders easy fix, head light stalk playing up, lights on all the time when light stalk is switched off still passes the mot, most reliable car we have owned.

Our 2003 Ulysse has been a dream of a car. The only thing we have had to replace is the exhaust (got a stainless steel system made), a new turbo and of course brakes pads/discs along with upteen changes of tyres on the fronts! Not bad for a car we've owned for 9 years.

Most horror stories involve the cambelt - I've always ignored the manufacturer's recommendations and changed it early.

Another problem is the 3 sunroof optional extra which always leak and fixing that involves removing the headliner and pillar covers which is a major job.

The best model for value is the Prestigio as it has most of the gadgets but it only comes as a 6 seater variant. Best to find one with no sunroofs or electric doors and you can't go far wrong!

Honestly...dont bother. I bought mine off of my Dad and its been nothong but bloomin trouble since. In 6 weeks I have spent just over £400 on parts and thats doing the work myself.
Its a 2005 2.0 JTD with 135000 on the clock so shouldnt be having the problems it is!

Still theres a bad one in every bunch but I wish I had bought a Galaxy instead.

And on the Ford forums hundreds of people saying the same thing about the Galaxy.

As long as you pick one that has a good service history (receipts for MOTs etc) and an owner that has not let "anything go" then these cars are very hard to beat.

Avoid the petrol versions though as they cost £460 a year to tax! The diesel is £270 a year, a big factor if you are buying ones with no road tax included in the sale!

looked at a few petrol models recently and they were tax band L! 2004-2005 models but they were autos so maybe that made a difference?

I was going to get a LPG conversion done as they are reasonably cheap now (£1200 quoted) due to the ever spiraling cost of diesel!. But the extra £200 a year road tax made it hardly worth bothering, along with the annual lpg service.

Yes I took that into consideration too! £10 really is a joke, if they want people to be greener they need to a lot better than that.

So the fact you already get a massive tax levy on the fuel isn't enough then

Indeed, but nowhere near as much as your trying to claim.

One fault with a modern diesel and the cost of repair will make you wish you'd gone petrol and LPGed it.
