Hi hi hi everyone :slayer:

Was wondering if anyone could help a fellow FF member!

I was thinking of changing the colour of my Punto MK1 60sx (5 door) from standard silver to white.

I have had 2 quotes from 2 companies:
1st company quoted me £1500 for a re-spray without the engine bay, doors, boot and bonnet and £2000 :)thumbd:) for a FULL re-spray.
2nd company quoted me £2000 also for a FULL re-spray.

Does anyone know ANYHWERE near me cheaper than this??! :confused: I live in the MK45 post code zone.

Please, please help!
 
Could be cheaper to wrap it? Then it can always be taken off if you don't like it. Buy cheap, buy twice. The secret to a good respray is good preparation.
 
£2k is because there many many many hours of labour in preperation in it

Think about it - doing all the doors takes ages of prep and masking off the door card/window/rubbers and the interior door frame
Those door shuts - its a pain as you cant get tools in there, its gotta be done by hand!

the boot floor is a decent time to mask up to prevent spraying unwanted bits

Tbh - if you want a white car to look mucky in 5mins on the road
buy a white car

Imo - either as said - wrap it
or live with silver, which tbh is a better colour then white, as people would rather buy silver over white due to it looking less dirty all the time

I suppose so :) I'm just worried about bubbling the car wrap if I do it myself :eek:

No, no I understand that there is A LOT of work involved but I'm sure there are less popular garages that would do the job for a cheaper price.

Yeah but I like white cars :rolleyes: plus there is no way of me selling my Punto, I'mma keep for life! :D

The boot needs to come off, doors, wings, bonnet. Doors need to be stripped down, so does the boot, lights out etc etc
Then theres any repairs to do like dents, rust patches, scrapes etc
(not saying that you do) but some people just think you take your car, drive it into the booth and just paint it straight away
It will probably be cheaper to wrap it tbh

Regarding the respray, could it be possible to prep the car yourself? Taking the doors/boot/bonnet off, lights + windows out and stripping the paint? How would that affect the cost and would that work? If you don't mind me asking :p

Unless you have a decent amount of knowledge of how the car comes to bits then I say leave it to the bodyshop, ive had customers in the past come and strip the car themselves and loose bits or end up damaging stuff that we've had to put right for them
regarding the paint on the car already, if there is no repairs at all to be done and no known wavy filler than a scotch will do the job to give the next layer of primer to stick to the paint better and give it a good key so it doesnt flake off
by all means you could go in and help them out with whatever they need and they might knock some money off for you if you do simple things for them like wet sanding the primer or scotching the car for them etc

I took the car to bits ONCE when I first got it to give an extra good clean (y)
I mean I know how to take the car to bits and stuff, but last time I painted everything ran :bang: I used normal duct tape, should I have used different?

I mean I can try and do it myself, give a few practice runs on a spare panel from a scrappy? Is it worth it? Because there is no way of me selling my Punto, and I really want white instead of standard silver :yum:

it is pretty simple but things like stripping the doors down can be time consuming and a bit tricky sometimes especially getting the glass out so it doesnt get overspray on it
for masking you need specialised masking tape that doesnt leave residue, doesnt curl with heat and most important doesnt bleed (leak through)
It wont hurt to practise but if you can, try and find someone willing to lend you a proper spray gun and compresser and practise with that because you will never get a good finish with rattle cans at all
And also try and use 2pack paint and not basecoat and lacquer because its easier to lay down and a lot tougher paint

I don't really know anyone with a spray gun :( But I know someone with a compressor! :p
Plus, I think Dad wouldn't be too happy to come back to a white garage, instead of grey. :D

After its on the car thats it done, dont need to spray anything else on it apart from a few coats. But then there is also basecoat and lacquer. Both types of paint needs primer first then the basecoat needs a few coats to cover then lacquer afterwards to give it the shine

So what you're saying is that it goes in this order:
1 - Primer
2 - A few coats of 2pack paint
3 - Primer
4 - Basecoat (also 2pack paint, I assume)
5 - Lacquer

Is that what you meant? :D

What most people do at home for repairs, is halfords rattle cans...

Oh I see! But surely for the 2pack system there needs to be some sort of a finish, like a lacquer?
I see what you mean about the 'old-school' way; primer to make the paint stick, paint, and then a coat of lacquer to make the paint last :)
