Trouble with stilo again.. All of a sudden the engine failure came up on display.. and there is jerk felt frequently.. Also feeling like it lost power while accelerating etc.. there is a constant jerk/vibration.. Took it to thames fiat in slough.. they are saying coils need replacement and would cost around 400..I am really pissed off with this stilo.. any suggesions whats the best to do..

Only change the one coil that needs doing. Like your tyres, you don't have to change them all at the same time. £50 tops- do it yourself-10min job
Find a scrappy and use a 2nd hand one £10 tops

£400 is absolutely disgusting, I have a good mind to phone them up and enquire as to their breakdown of that (n)

Think a name and shame is in order! And a call to FIAT Uk?!

Okay..I have called them up again.. They say ignition coils need replacing..Now even if I dont get the job done from them they will charge me £100 for diagnosis ..This is my first car..so dont have much idea on DIY..

I'd demand a breakdown of that £100 and involve trading standards

Any Fiat garage should be able to diagnose in under 15 minutes so are they charging £400 an hour

Ask them for their charge rate.

One hour diag is the norm, even though it can take less, similar to a basic call out charge/fee if you like. However it shouldn't just be a quick reading of the codes but a proper identification of the fault.

ah thames fiat in slough, i still need to know what engine though before i ring up an call shenanigans

Stilo Dynamique , 1.6 16V ,

2003 Model.. Rang them up this morning ..asked them to replace only the faulty coils.. they are saying if one has gone bad sooner rather than later others will also go bad..?

You can buy a single 1.6 coil for about £40 or so, with FF discount, from Shop4parts.

Then replace the faulty one yourself - it literally takes a few minutes to find the faulty one :)

Any Stilo members live in this area?

tell them the Listed Price: £41.26 + vat and its only takes half hour to change all 4, say every one on fiatforum says so, so even if all 4 did need replacing they are still over charging.

if you are that worrid that the rest will go just buy the others from shop 4 parts pop along to a ff meet and some one will show you how to fit them

avoid cheap & nasty coils...saw some real dodgy ones the other day fitted to a stilo, apparently cost £25 had the name 'power' on it:rolleyes:

Thanks a lot for help.

Got it done from them as I had to pay 100 pounds if I dont ..This is the bill..

Labour - 132 ( They said 1.5 hours )
Parts - 4 * 42.7 0 = 170.80
VAT - 53.38

Total : 356.18

Now how do I put this garage in black list ... Also , whats FF meat? I live in bracknell berkshire.. Any suck even happening in near future?

1.5 hours

Engine cover off, remove the 4 bolts, remove the clips - remove old coils, put new coils in - replace clips and bolts, cover back on!

Oh, of course the 1.25 hours on the diagnostic machine to tell them it needed a coil changing ;)

Ive done a sum here , and maths is not my strongest subject, so I calculate an hourly rate of £88 plus vat at your garage. This is a good bit (like 40%) more that our local fiat main dealer charges and a lot more than the independent specialists nearby. Do most FF people really pay this sort of labour charge?
