Thanks very much guys! and yeah Coyle, I agree.. I was gonna buy the Eibach Sportline spring kit but then you have the issue of uprating the dampers.. and by the time you've bought them you might as well have bought yourself some coilies.

Any advice on the best (and cheapest) move?

depends how low your gona go if i was you id get the coilovers if ur gona go low if not get springs and dampers

If lowering is not an issue, you can achieve a massive improvement in handling (without the deterioration in ride quality that lowering brings) by fitting a set of good quality dampers. KONI Sports (pricey admittedly) will transform your car.

I'm also considering the eibach springs for my abarth, wasn't aware that you had to uprate the dampers aswell? Is that essential?
I only want to lower it by 30mm just to improve the look more than anything, not too fussed about drastically improving the handling, i'm a bit past hooning round bends at 90mph now!

the maximum you should go without dampers should be 35-40mm but its advised to get upgraded dampers as the OEM's would be to weak to dampen the spring force and also they would wear alot quicker.

It's not so much the dampers wear out quicker but more the fact they cease to work very well. At 35-40mm drop the standard dampers would struggle to keep the rubber in contact with the road surface on anything approaching a bad surface - which is obviously not a good recipe for fast cornering (or ride comfort) ;)

buy cheap, buy twice

on something like suspension, its worth waiting till you can afford something abit better to be honest mate

Yep thats what i did. I worked out that by doing it properly you wont see much change from £1000 so i bought a GP Schumacher with the Uprated Suspention set up by prodrive. In the end the changeover will be cheaper than doing the modifications that i wanted to do to my old car.

Thanks for the replies Adrian + Argo. So as long as I go with the eibach springs that claim to lower it by 30mm I should(?) be alright with the standard dampers?

you would be ok with them my friends had a 30mm apex drop with his standard dampers and its ok if i was you id get uprated dampers tho the ride quality is alot better.

Yep, very good reports on Eiback -30mm with standard dampers (y)

They still wont be perfect on poor surfaces but if you keep to mainly good roads then that shouldn't be a big issue (you'll want to keep well away from really bad roads anyway if lowered ;))

Yeah the 30mm ones are the Eibachs Pro's, right?

I'm eyeing up the Sportlines with the 50mm drop but I dunno what Dampers to pair them with.. would any old aftermarket dampers do?

I would think twice about Sportlines unless you have super smooth roads and no speed humps in your area. And no, you will need more than 'any old dampers' to keep the car in check on Sportlines. KONI or Bilstein spring to mind...

I havnt read the second page of the thread yet but what is the point in 30mm drop on a 1.4. From what i can gather the drop will be more like 10-15mm. So a barely noticable drop and a degree of reduced handling just isnt worth the hassle IMO.

You know that :slayer:
