think my clutch is on its way out, cant get reverse without massive grinding noises and can only seem to select 3rd when stationary an 3rd and 4th when moving.

is this my clutch and how much if it is?

cheers charlie

The crunching reverse is quite common with the uno :bang: The rest however isnt.

Theres a little plug in the gearbox housing near the engine. If you take this plasitc cover you can see the thickness of the clutch plate and see if its worn or not. It the dark grey material eitherside of a metal plate which you are looking for. If its very thin then yes it could be on its way out.

Other things it could be is a gearbox fault... If the clutch had gone, in theory you shouldnt be able to select 3rd or 4th either - it wont go in any gears at all.

Could be your clutch cable has stretched, so you need to retighten the cable thats attached to the gearbox operating arm.

Double D Clutch....

Hi charlieboys93UNO,

I have had similar problems but wi 1st and 2nd.

See https://www.fiatforum.com/showthread.php?t=21132 and try double d clutching, and changing gearbox Oil first -as you have the same box as me lol.

You could try http://www.shop4parts.co.uk/ Or http://www.buypartsby.co.uk/sitemap.php for clutch parts.

I’d go to one or two garages and ask them "how much for a new clutch" (Parts and fitting - but they will presume you mean this).

Then ask them for a breakdown quote, then if you can get the parts cheaper, ask them if they will do a fitting only.

They will prob. tell you they can’t guarantee the parts, but you have the shop guarantee, and their fitting guarantee. You have to be 100% sure you order (and get) the correct part each time you use this root lol.

Kind Regards,

cheers guys, it seems that when selecting 3rd 4th i have to kinda knock the s*** out of the gear stick to get it in

luke, i never had crunching on my reverse before, yday it was a little crunchy loud, but before the weekend it was fine had no problems with any of the gears

Arrrrrrrr Charlie, NOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!! M8

– Each time it gets harder? What next? You’ll end up needing a new gearbox if you don’t pack it in lol.

Use Double D Clutch to help glide her in gear lol.

It might also be the bar at the back of the box seizing up.

Kind Regards,

Hi Again,

Just remembered

– I reckon our clutch problem could be caused by leaking distributor gaskets – see AlexGS’s input on https://www.fiatforum.com/showthread.php?t=24730&highlight=Ring+gasket

Kind Regards,

louie its not gettin worse i havnt used the car since this morning when i discovered the problem, i was just adding to the description.lol

Re-clutch....

Hi Charlie,

;) I meant over the next few weeks / Months – If you push the stick harder as the problem gets worse – something more expensive will give lol.

To Double D Clutch – each time you change gear, press clutch, slip out of gear, let clutch out (into neutral), repress clutch, glide into gear, let clutch out.

I know it’s cumbersome, but will extend the life of the box till you get it sorted. I have the odd problem wi 1st and 2nd – so each time it will not easily glide into gear, I release and re-dip clutch then try again.

Thinking again, you probably have a hydraulic clutch. What’s the fluid reservoir level like? Dose the bite point hold on the clutch, or do you need to press clutch pedal lower and lower to hold at the bite point? –Suggesting slave or master clutch cylinder leak…

 When my clutch went (in a 903) the clutch plates were not holding together and transferring the engine power to the wheels – Loads of revs in gear – getting nowhere – and worse up hill lol.

Kind Regards,

That’s the C514 Box ;). If you don't know when or if the gear oil was last changed - I'D get some (from FIAT dealer) and start fresh...

Kind Regards,
