It is the clutch master cylinder. The master tells the slave what to do. A new clutch master cylinder is not expensive. I did my mk2b one myself but there must surely be an easier way of doing it than the way i did it! Most of the master is inside the engine compartment and you have to remove it from that direction. From inside the car it is on the other end of the rod that comes from the pedal and you can see the two ends of the bolts coming thru from the other side but those bolts have to be reached from the other side. On my one the master is under the brake servo which makes it very difficult to get to from on top. Probably easier from the wheel arch or from underneath. I took the slave off to release the pressure so i could get to the pedal connection - my pedal still worked sort of but would not fully return and was getting worse and worse. - the haynes diy manual explanation was too brief for me to work out how to do it their way. . Bleeding the system has a two position valve at the slave with the pin removed. pull out one click to bleed as i recall with the pin removed. Other people are tying up the end of the slave with cable ties to stop the piston coming out . The master has to be separated from the pedal. I made a right mess of that job and ended up taking the clip off the pedal to work out how to separate the two. There might be an easier method than taking the clip off? If you break the clip on the pedal though you are going to be in a world of pain. My clip survived but this job was not one of my finest moments.
