Its a Punto mk1 from '95, when i press the clutch, half way trough i feel a slight resistance and as i keep pressing all of the sudden it releases and makes a loud popping sound.

Note: only does it when the engine is on.
If i start it up when the clutch is pressed, in the moment as it starts up it clicks again

The clutch is working fine I don't notice any changes in the performance.

What can i do to remedy the situation? I believe the clutch is cable operated, not hydraulic.

If you had a Mk2 I would say it sounds like the release springs on the pressure plate are damaged and you will need a new clutch kit.Listen to the bellhousing area when someone else operates the clutch , if the noise is inside fairly certain its the clutch.Keep an eye on the operating arm on the bellhousing as well just to make sure it's secure. Before tearing out the gearbox I would disconnect the cable just to make sure it is running free.

sounds exactly the same as what has just happend to mine the relese bearing had eaten its way through the pressure plate
How fast should i change it? Or it will still work for a while?

Had the same thing on my jtd mk2. At first there was that popping sound, and resistence of pedal, then release. Later when i was in first gear and clutch pressed to the floor, the car still wanted to move forward slithly. Turned out that the release bearing had eatin its way through the pressure plate. The friction plate (don't know if thats the right word) was knackered too. Had to buy new Valeo clutch kit. The old one was Valeo too, don't know if that was an original part or not, would be nice to know. Anyways, i do strongly believe that u'll need a new clutch kit.
