Clutch knackered - £720 quote from Dealer

The clutch on my car decided that it doesnt want to work anymore. £&^%@!!!

I rang around for quotes. the cheapest so far is £299 (inc. 2 yr warranty) from Mr Clutch. The most expensive? My local Fiat dealer in Brighton who wants £720.

My problem is that i need to get the car to the clutch center. I can move the car in and out of gear freely with the engine off. Therefore, how much damage am I liable to do push starting the car in second and driving it there myself?

The Car is a 100TDi with a cat convertor. I seem to remember reading somewhere that push starting a turbo, or a diesel, or a car with a cat, knackers one of the aforementioned. Cant remember which, or indeed if i am right.

My clutch blew on Tuesday last week, Fiat charged me £310 for a sports clutch and a part for my gear box which I nacked. The part on my gear box cost a staggering £12.....this was due to me trying to change gear (you could do this one older cars) with out my clutch.

The Price I got was from the Priory Fiat group in Mansfield.

I would go back to them and ask where they get back.

P.S Say to your local Fiat dealer that Mansfield lot charge this amount and they will match it. Me is not pulling your leg

They were also going to charge me £530 for a camblet change and service. As I can afford to be choosey about this I phoned up Fiat in Liverpool and they can do it for £320. Think I'll wait until i get home for Xmas.

However, without a clutch I am somewhat stationary so Mr Clutch on Wednesday it is. £329.99 inc labour, vat, collection etc.

And that was the best quote by over £100 pouns out of the seven garages I phoned in the Brighton area.

Brighton: It is a lovely town, just hope your Bravo doesnt break down here!

Thanks wize@ss. I feel good about that and I am happy for you also.

In the end the problem proved to be a shot slave cylinder. Cost £140 inc. towing, labour, parts vat etc.

Probably paid over the odds but from my first call to the dealer of £720 I'll settle for £140.

The good things is I am on the road again. Woohoo!

For a new (new) gearbox, cluth, bearings, cambelt change and full service.
from a company in E17 Walthemstow. Fantastic service the new box is a jem. Lovelly clutch.
