So, after finding someone's helpful guide on how to replace the lower mounting, the deed was done this afternoon with the car on ramps.

The old one was indeed split at one end.

This has made an immediate difference, the car driving much smoother especially in traffic. Just a slight vibration on occasion, but I'll happily live with that.

Now to replace the rotten Flexi join with bolt-on one😀

Then it's the wheel bearing...sigh.
 
Rear wheel bearings are easy as the tube and bearing come complete. You just need a 600mm breaker bar and suitable socket.

Front wheel bearings are a lot more work with the old race having to be pressed out. I bought a press kit that gives a range of spare tubes thick end plates and a heavy threaded bar to press it all in/out. A hydraulic press is (much) easier but needs considerably more money and garage space.
