Hi Guys, really appreciate all the info. So here is the update.
1. My son went for another test drive (and actually read the owner's manual). It is the actual start/stop system working. My diagnosis is the following. When he got the car (second hand) there were already issues with the alternator and belt which probably were not functioning at 100%. Having had the battery disconnected for several days while working on the alternator, reset the system. Then actually fixing the alternator and the auxiliary belt tension - got everything working correctly. So thanks to @jackwhoo for pushing this diagnosis several times.
2. The brake reservoir is full (but I think the colour is off). I don't think the brake fluid has ever been changed. I have bled brakes in the past, is this something that would be a good thing to do from a maintenance perspective?
3. Haven't had a chance to go through all the diagnosis that @GrandePunto PL suggests. Will do this next.
But the issue (as many of you have mentioned) is that there is little distance when you lift the your foot off the clutch for the gears to engage. So I'd love to fix this in the hopes that it saves the bigger clutch issues in the future.
The Hayne's manual explains how to bleed the clutch. Is this something that I should try?
Thanks for your help.
