Hi Everyone,

I have just bought a Marea 1.9 diesel with a clutch fault. The person who sold it me thought it was the slave cylinder at fault. The car will not go into gear but it is possible to start it in gear and the engine will keep running with the brake applied (otherwise the car will creep forward). There does not appear to be a loss of fluid. I have looked if the clutch arm is moving and it is travelling to it's full extent. Any ideas please?

never heard of but could it be a fluid lock
check brake fluid is topped up and try bleeding the clutch cylinder.] or check release bearing or the actuating fork????(y)

It sounds like the clutch is knackered which 1.9 is it? Could have dual mass flywheel which might not be in very good nick. If the arm is moving the full distance I think you will be needing to take the gear box off to see whats wrong.

Agree with the above. If the slave cylinder is moving the cluth arm across fully then we can elliminate it.
Also if it were the slave cylinder then by putting the car into gear without engine running it would allow the gear to engage and thus be engaged as you attempted to start.

Thank you for the replies. Has now been diagnosed as a problem within the bell housing, ie. although the clutch arm is moving fully, still not enough clutch. Gearbox has to come off to check whatever. Anyone any idea as to how long a job iot is to take off and replace the gearbox?
