hi all , well it goes like this . just got back from 1500 mile trip to france and multipla ran like a dream :) that was untill the last 30 miles noticed clutch slipping at high revs  , so pulled over to find oil had splashed all under car and on the boot . from reading several posts i can come to a few conclusions , 1 . slave cylinder fault (not very likely ) 2. dmf fault . 3 oil seals gone and contaminated fly wheel (most likely i think) bearing in mind i havent had chance to look properly untill tomorrow , so with all your help do you think my conclusion would be correct or is there a better outcome?( i can hope) . also does anyone know of a link on how to change oil seals , iam a pretty good diy'er and ive already found the link on changing the cluth which im pretty confident i can manage (fingers crossed) .

I think your 3rd option is the most likely, like a lot of other Multi's, my gearbox has a minor leak/weep but it's not getting any worse. Slave cylinder leak would end up with clutch not working, DMF fault wouldn't create an oil leak.

Is this gearbox oil or engine oil, I've read on the forum that the crankcase seal is relatively easy - can't comment about the gearbox input seal.

If you are doing the clutch yourself, someone recently posted on the forum about a very good value clutch/DMF bundle.

You could start by checking all your fluid levels to see if any are significantly down,ie engine, gearbox and hydraulic fluid. Also all these fluids have a destinctive smell and feel, can you tell whats all over you underside. You may have a problem with clutch contamination, wear on the crankshaft oil seal is common, its the one behind your dmf, sometimes the gearbox shaft oil seal wears and leaks as well. Buypartsbuy sell full clutch and dmf for about £280 the crankshaft oil seal is about £40 and the gearbox oil seal about £20 I think. Doing it youself is possible,I found it to be very difficult and takes ages, but a fiat indy quoted my £500 to supply just a clutch kit and fitting.

right well i have looked this morning and this is what i was greeted by.

hopefully pics have worked , but as you can see the leak is definately coming between box and engine and its gearbox oil .

so am i right in thinking its oil seals gone and contaminated clutch ? .
therefore does anyone know a link on how to change seals thanks again

If it's the crank shaft oil seal then you need to remove gearbox, clutch & DMF.

Yes... I'd say your right.
If your assumption is right regarding oil type it can really only be gearbox seal.
New seal and new clutch...shouldn't need to go near dmf unless substantial play in it.

Marty.

You have to remove dmf to get to the seal. I've done it. Also, common sense says replace dmf.

Edit: just reread you say its defo gearbox oil. You can remove that tinplate cover in your pic, and with a torch see the back of the dmf. Check for oil. Also check the sump seal. Another I had was the plastic breather box top middle rear of engine. That had a split pipe.

Snoo.
Is the breather box you describe somewhere behind the egr??...
I've a leak running down onto the intercooler pipe and I'm certain it's coming from intake pipe but I can't see a split.
Curious about what you mentioned.
Thanks
Marty.

yes its defo gearboxoil , its got a good smell to it , and also had the whining from gearbox as it was prob dry . ive taken the plate off and all looks dry no obvious signs of oil  and also removed the top inspection cover also this seems dry to! i have searched everywhere i can see looking for any signs of a leak from somewhere but the only place is where you can see in photos. .
so another thing is ive shopped around for diferent prices on clutch kits and apparently there are 2 different ones depending on which dmf you have but they vary £100 in difference , is there anyway of knowing which one i need unless i strip engine ? .

Even with your VIN, it's no guarantee that you'll get the right parts.

Better to strip and split, then you'll know for def. The other advantage is you'll know then whether to order a clutch to suit your DMF or a DMF/Clutch combo.

There is a post on the forum which details how to change a clutch, well worth finding.

Hope that your DMF is good and it's just a clutch kit you need.

Changing the input shaft seal is easy enough once the box is out but make sure the bearing behind it isn't worn. That's usually the reason the seal leaks and is often the cause of the whine as well.
