General Clutch/Gearbox problems

Okay, so heres the story:

2 months ago i had problems with my clutch cable, in which case it snapped and the clutch went to the floor. So the garage reattached the cable (apparently it hadnt snapped, just broke off).

Anyway, a month later, it did snap, and so i got my works garage to fit a new one, cheap as chips, no problem. Until this weekend, drove from shropshire to liverpool, okay at first, but by the time i got to liverpool to see the missus, the stick would just not go into gear, reverse crunched real loud, and first and second just become unbearable, and wouldnt go into gear. I decided to go home, and at every island/traffic lights i got to(yes there are thousands in liverpool centre), i had to switch off the engine just to put it into gear. Anyway, to cut a long story short. Im now home, and the car is in my works garage. My mate tells me it could be problems with the clutch or the gearbox now, but isnt sure til its fixed. Anyone else had similar problems?
If so, how much would a new clutch or gearbox cost?

Chances are it's adjustment. Get the guys in overalls to try that. If you do need a clutch I've got one out of a 20,000 mile Sei you can have for nowt next time you're in Liverpool (they're only about £40 new from eBay, etc).

Cheers for that mate, will keep it in mind. Well ive had a word with me mate in the garage on me lunch break, not long after starting this topic. Hes adjusted it and it now works fine. My only concern is, the old clutch cable i had the same problem with, and so he adjusted that one. Thing is, couple of hours later, the same thing happened again and it snapped. What are the chances of this happening again with the new cable?

Sometimes the cables snap spontaneously, but often it's a symptom that the clutch is done for.

If the cable is reaching the end of its adjustment, the release bearing could be grinding away at the cover.

So if it goes again within the next week or so (it lasted a couple of hours last time!) then its more than likely going to be a new clutch/pressure plate thats needed? If so, how much are those likely to cost?

Was thinking this myself earlier, but i would of thought the mechanic would of suggested this too, or at least checked it. None the less, may get him to have a look tomorrow anyway

has your clutch cable got a locking nut on it ? mine didnt and i found myself adjusting it every two weeks !

chances are if the cable is new it wont snap. but im thinking your cable is slipping and your nut is spinning. bringing your biteing point lower to the ground untill you actually on the biting point when your foot is pressed to the max.

So if it goes again within the next week or so (it lasted a couple of hours last time!) then its more than likely going to be a new clutch/pressure plate thats needed? If so, how much are those likely to cost?

i actually done my clutch on my cinq sporting a week ago, like fingers said there only £40 or so, and there not to difficult to do yourself. even with no mechanical expeiriance. (cant spell )

if you want to take it to a garage expect £250 - £300 to empty your wallet. Check the guides section, ive not long posted a step by step guide on how to do it yourself. condisering you have a sporting

The garage at work tell me if the cable goes again, or even detaches, then it will more than likely be the clutch/pressure plate that needs replacing. If so, they cant do it because it takes too much time and so they would be happy to book it in at a place they trust.
Im guessing from him saying this, its a lengthy thing to do, and with no mechanical experience (or mind for that matter!) im not too confident i could get it done myself. I'll have a look for your guide, and see what it involves, thanks for the info mate.

The mechanic can't really check it without taking the gearbox off.
