Hi
im having trouble in the winter when its really cold selecting a gear, its ok when i manage to get one and have been driving for around 5-10 mins! i have been told it could be the clutch fluid, gearbox oil or the cables!
i would like to maybe have a check of the clutch fluid if someone could help me, and tell me how i change it i would be eternally grateful!

thanks
Amy:D

Hi Amy, Welcome to the FF.

Changing the clutch fluid involves bleeding the old fluid out from the clutch slave cylinder which is mounted on, or inside the gearbox. There are different types of slave cylinder fitted to the Stilo range depending on engine size. The bleeding process is slightly different for each of them.

However, if you only get the gear changing problem when the engine is cold, it's more likely to be a problem with the gearbox oil. Possibly the wrong type of oil.

i would go along with that about the oil?, when i first got mine, it never like going into gear for the first 5 mins untill it warmed up, plus it crunched going into 4th if it went in to quickly, so i changed the box oil - nothing fancy just what the manual says - and it transformed the gear change completely? smoother with no crunching? (the old oil was suprisingly black?)

I have the same issue and it's common on some of the new Bravos and they're issues with the cables on them so would assume its similar on the Stilo.

If the rubbers on the end of the selector cables in the engine bay are split or none existent then from what I've seen in the bravo section I'd be inclined to say its them.

I've just never bothered sorting it on my Stilo as only happens when really cold <3-4C and the beginning section of the journey.

thanks guys, yeh it only happens when the cold weather comes and i can sit for around 20 mins with engine running to warm the car before it will select a gear! my dad said something about the clutch plates but as soon as the car is moving and warming up when driving it starts going back to normal and the gear changes are smooth again!
so do u guys think its worthwhile to get gearbox oil changed and also the cables checked? (i priced new cables at garage and its over £150!)
really appreciate your advice!

20 mins warm-up before the gearbox works doesn't sound right at all! But the cheapest first step would be to change the gearbox oil. Problems with the cables are rare.

when i get into the car it starts straight away and when i try selecting a gear 1st or reverse it wont go even with force (dont want to force too much as dont want to snap cables) sometimes can get 2nd after 10 mins etc! havent tried selecting a gear when car isnt started but im guessing its probably the same! ive tried getting into the car and pressing the clutch down numerous times to make it easier but to no avail! this morning i managed to get it into reverse after 10 mins of trying then i couldnt get first so got into 2nd! after few minutes of driving it was back to normal!
when i try to select a gear ie reverse the car actually rocks backwards!

its stumed me, going to try the gearbox oil change so advice on how i can do that myself would be appreciated, but also other ideas on what it could be would also be great!

thanks guys!

Hi

I have a Fiat Stilo 1.9 diesel JTD, do you need any more info?

thanks again

Not too familiar with the JTD 'box, but I believe the drain plug is No 8 and the fill plug No 7 in this diagram:

naread.png

Remove the fill plug first, then the drain plug. Make sure the oil is warm before draining. Once drained, replace the drain plug and refill.

You will know when you've reached the limit when a little oil starts to spill over, out of the fill hole.

thank you so much u have been a fab help, i will definately give this a go and let u know how it goes!
Do you think it could be something else with it taking so long to get a gear in the cold? when i eventually get a gear and start driving gears are crunchy n stiff then after 5 mins of driving they are back to normal!

thank you so much really appreciate it!
x

sorry to be a pain! is the drain plug under the car and the fill plug under the bonnet? i sound really blonde but i always get ripped off when i go to a garage and so to do it myself is best option!
also which oil would you recommend for this?

thank u again

Both of the plugs are under the car and are part of the gearbox casing. The lubricant you need is shown here (manual gearbox fluid):

i thought it would have been oil rather than fluid! i really appreciate ur help u have been great, myself and partner will definitely be doing a DIY attempt on it! hope it works! thank you again!

gearbox oil change

Can someone help me!

Im going to attempt to change the gearbox oil (is this also known as gearbox fluid?)

firstly the plug to drain it im guessing is under the car???

then the filler plug im guessing is under the bonnet???

also i was recommended Tutela car ZC75 synth 1 ltr manual gearbox fluid, however would normal gearbox fluid be the same?

I have a fiat stilo 1.9 jts dynamic.

thank you

Erm I answered your questions in your earlier post, so why are you repeating them in a new one?

Re: gearbox oil change

im just very confused sorry!

Does it select gears when the engine isn't running, is it only the first few gears or all of them? When you say can't select gear can't at all of will with a little pressure? Tried double declutching?

Hi i got into the car 5 mins ago and didnt turn the engine on but i cud select gears easily, however when i turned on the engine it was very difficult to select them!
