General Clutch cable replacement - how? Urgent help please

Clutch cable went today, but managed to nurse it home before it had gone completely - isn't driving round in 3rd great fun LOL
Got a new cable off Fiat - apparantly a new improved type

Me and my mechanic mate started to fit it, but we cant for the life of us work out how the part of the dashboard at the bottom comes off so we can gain access to the 'inside' end of the cable (the end with the hook).
We're gonna have another shot tomorrow, so if anyone knows how that piece of dash comes off - or indeed if there is another way of replacing the cable, please describe it.
To clarify, its the shelf type piece of the dash under the main bit where a glovebox would be on the passanger side that it looks like needs removing
Its a 2001 Seicento Sporting BTW

I think ive found the one you mean mate, but its not much help as this seems to be a problem specific to the sei.
We cant remove the part of the dash we need to to gain access to the hook part of the clutch cable if that makes sense

No, we've undone the two allen bolts on it, but it wont budge [V]

I might have read this wrong, but I think you need to be looking further back toward the bulkhead under there. There's a tin cover (not plastic, sorry) held in with screws on the cinqs, the top 2 screws are a bugger to get at but if you've undone the bottom ones you can just pop the top ones out.

the dash does not need to be touched, mine have gone several times and each time, i have just:

Inside off car:
1. pulled back carpet
2. un screw the little black box, i am gonna call it the ecu cause i dont know what it is, dont disconnect just move it too one side
3. unscrew the brass plate that is holding the cable to the car

under bonnet:
1. unscrew other end off clutch cable
2. go back inside off car and pull the cable out

too put it back in, just reverse the process, i will double check today, just in case i have missed something or got anything wrong

Clutch cable

removal/refitting

NOte: ON the right hand drive models the clutch pedel is transferred across the inside of the engine bulkhead behind the facia via a system of push rods and pivots to the left hand side of the veichile. The clutch cable then transfers the effort from this point to the release mechanism. On the left handle models theclutch pedal is connected directly to the cable.

Removal

Remove the air cleaner first and its associated trunking. At the transmisson end of the clutch cable unscrew the lock nutt and adjuster nut from the end of the fitting Then release the inner and outer cables from the bracket on the transmission housing. Note the position of the damper block.

Working inside the veichile, under neath the right hand side of the facia, unhook the inner cable from the top of the clutch push rod pivot.

Returning to the engine compartment unscrew the nuts securing the outer cable flange to the bulkhead, then withdraw the cable assembly from the compartment.

Refitting

Apply a smear of multi purpose grease to the cable end fittings, then pass the cable through the bulkhead. Refit and tighten the cable flange securing nuts.

Inside the veichile hook the inner cable on to the push rod pivot.

In the engine compartment, attach the outer cable to the transmission housing and refit the damper block and nuts to the inner cable end. ADjust the clutch cable and refit the air cleaner

Taken from the haynes manual for the cinquecento i hope it can be of some assistance.

Thanks for the info!!!, my Sei 1.1 clutch cable went the other day so I used this as a guide and fixed it with a mate's help, what a fiddly awkward job, had to take out the ECU & its protection plate. Unfortunately I lost the thin brass washer that separates the new split-pin & quad lever but I stuck plenty of grease over it to save any wear & tear. I have only done 25,000 miles from new but living in London it's all clutchwork stuck in traffic-jams, would probably last for 75,000+ in the sticks. It was the right-angled part of the cable that fits into the quad lever that snapped. Thanks again.

The metal cover plate should come off without removing the lower dash parts, once it is off leave it off as you'll find it makes things easier in the future & it doesn't really do much - be quite an achievement for a passenger to get their foot all the way up there!!!

Just for information as well, i have heard of a few people refer to the box in the passenger well, behind the carpet as the ECU.....its not

It's the CODE box which talks to the transponder around the key barrel and the ECU which sits in the engine bay passenger side (UK) about 3/4 the way back with one or two big leads coming out of it. Even if its a tiny one, it's still the ecu, just a smaller one

Just had mine replaced today....£84 thank you very much!

The RAC guy said that the Sei is prone to clutch cable problems and recommended I carry a spare!

....this coming after a new rear exhaust section on Saturday has really made my week.

Cento clutch cables usually die because the clutch is on its way out.
