agreed with rallycinq about disconnecting batteries when running, when you disconnect a battery which was just after starting a car, its pulling a bit of current from the alternator. if the load (i.e. battery) is suddenly removed, the alternator voltage output will suddenly spike, sometimes to over 100 volts, as the regulator takes a finite amount of time to adjust and drop the alternator output. The spike might might last less than a millisecond, but its enough to damage electronics. its called a load dump, and most stuff is only protected to around 60 volts..
