Strange problem with my Cinq Sporting (1998, 36000 miles) gearbox.

Seems to be quite notchy/sticky, had a new clutch (release bearing also) last year and have checked adjustment. Loads of clearance and definitely not dragging. Just changed gearbox oil as well but made no difference and it doesn't seem to matter whether it's hot or cold. Seems to be worst into 2nd and 3rd gears but all can be a problem.

Any help would be appreciated. Also, if the gearbox is shot what other Fiat gearboxes are the same fitting? Ideally I could get one out of a very late Seicento Sporting and hopefully that would last a while.

Thanks in anticipation.

Mines also v.notchy- just don't tell it do hurry up!, thats at 81k.

1993 Cinq SX, with the world's dodgiest fuel tank! Free fuel? Folllow Me!!

My 98' Cinq has done 30k and is 'notchy' into 2nd gear from 1st all the time, not too bad but noticeable. All gears tend to do it when cold, it's ok once I warm up though.

I'm sure the Sei sporting one would fit as they are the same engine.
Try lubrictaing (god i love that word :D) the gear linkage underneath the gearknob.
Pull off the gear lever gaitor and spray some oil on the metal joints you can see at the bottom

It were proper Bo i tell thee!!

My 55k cinq sporting fell out with it's first gear at birth and now they cat fight every time i try to go from 2nd to first. And i mean major bitch slapping.... Most of the gears infact are a bit touchy so i reckon its just a factory fitted 'characteristic' [xx(]

Run down of my gears at 55k, 1994 Cinq SX

1st: Sometimes feels like it is in but it isnt (Good for holding others up at lights and being the only guy who gets through. lol.). If you drop it in from 2nd as your running up to a junction above 10mph,it'll "hum".

2nd: no probs

3rd: has a crunch when selecting if the car is cold.

4th: If you change in to it above 40mph it likes it if you have to put enough pressure on the stick so it bends before it selects.

5th: no probs

Rev: no probs.

If I was to have efficient gearchanges in my car, id use only 2nd, 5th and reverse! lol

It's just a Fiat charachteristic and im sure everyone else agrees including all the others who have replied already.

Thanks for the comments so far guys, I'm new to this forum and it's good to see so many people use it.

I must admit that I'm still concerned though as the problem came on suddenly in the past 2 weeks. Sure the gearchange has always been a bit cack but not like it is now. I'll keep you posted about it.

Cheers

PS.Saturday I get my Alfa 156, can't wait. Yellow Box will be staying too as my run-around.:D

Totally irrelevant but am i the ONLY person from cornwall on this forum?! I think im one of about 7 cinq owners down here! 3 reds, two lellows, one purple and one black. One of them must read the forum because he took Cento's advice and i always see him parked diagonally across parking spaces!:D
