They are plastic, they shouldnt corrode but will over time go off a bit and generally look naff. In my vast experiance of plastic chrome on Vespas it seems to last around five or six years before going "off".
My bumpers are fine but I have discolouration markings on the strips under the windows. Not noticeable unless you are cleaning the car fastidiously. (Is there any other way).

The bits of chrome i clean and dry off well seem to come up fine, but the one on the back bumper that is soon to be replaced I havent lavished much attention on has weathered and looks kinda mottled. hope it doesnt all end up like this or we might as well all have bought Pops!
Well my wheel caps have gone again! as has the boot chrome trim.
But i saw a DIESEL 500 today and they have matt trim's on there.. i think ill be changing mine over to those. i really like the matt finish wing mirror covers to.

These trim pieces are chrome plated plastic and plastic will not corrode like plated steel and diecast zinc did from decades past. The chrome may discolour over time (the salty roads will not have helped) but I've found waxing helps and as someone else mentioned glass cleaner works too. I had a new Mini that did the same so no 'typical Fiat quality' jibes apply.
