"2nd Hand but....but to him it's brand new as he not had it long..."

Still not brand new though!

"As the car is brand new"

How is it brand new? MK2 Punto in 2017?? If it is then these items should be warranty claims.

Waoh... Way to hijack a thread over a typing error.

You know a 2004 car is not brand new in 2017. But when typing quickly it about a fault with a car I just bought it comes out incorrectly. You added nothing by bringing that up accept increasing your post count.

Dont worry about the weird banter that sometimes occours...

Never had todo a core plug
But i believe if u make a crease line down middle with a chiesel it helps pop the edge up and help lever it out
Rememebr they are an interance fit

Id dunno if its worth putting a little blue hylomar on it when fitting just to help ensure it seals up

Remember to drain coolant before u start
It makes sense to change it deoending on ur budget

Good luck with bleeding it up.... some are right little swines to bleed up properly

Come on, a typo? A different phrase maybe but hardly a typo. Why would I want to increase a post count? That means absolutely nothing. Don't even see the point in it. If somebody claims to have a "brand new" car and posts about problems then....... I shouldn't have to explain, I'm sure you know what I mean. There is also an "Edit" feature for your information.;)

Look, you're adding nothing to this.

I need help with a car not how to talk. This thread is now so polluted with nonsense that it may be hard for those that can help me to understand what is going on. Go to the banter sections if you want to talk s£it. Edit is only available for a short time.

Of course help is the primary idea here but to get the appropriate help the issue needs to be explained properly.

Last time i changed a core plug (albeit on a Ford)...screwdriver in middle, bashed with a hammer and then just levered it out...30secs to 1min job.....fitting a new core plug not so easy. If you place it over the hole and whack it with a hammer it generally just bounces off the block and wont go in.
I found easiest way was put it in at a slight angle and then once it had started to go in hit on the other side to straighten it up. was a PITA but eventually got it in......of course some of the brains on here may know a better way.

A tight fitting bit of hard wood that is the same diameter as the inside of the core plug helps as you can hit the timber without fear of damaging anything. Bit of sealant on the outside as well.

I haven't yet been able to take off the timing belt cover to confirm if it is oil or water but it's starting to look to me more like it is oil.

The rocker cover gasket is now starting to weep oil and it looks like it is coming out at the side where the cam is. Am I right?

If it is, could that imply that a hose is blocked and there is too much pressure or that the rings are worn?

It does seem to be blowing a lot when I lift of the oil filler cap and smells like exhaust gas but I don't know if it is excessive as I have never seen a 1.2 8V punto before.

Is there anything in those pictures indicating a head issue too?

Hi SR71BB,If oil is coming through the rocker cover, a new gasket is required, but as you say ,you are also loosing water from the core plug. I have only ever replaced one many years ago in a "cast iron" block and the trick then was to use a socket as big as you can get but just a bit smaller than the plug. Don't get carried away by hammering too hard. Before you take the old plug out make a note of how far the plug sits in the hole. I recall fitting it dry but that was with a cast iron block. Hopefully someone with more idea than me might have a view on this as blocks tend to be alloys.Try not to get too frustrated with some of the replies we are only human. Please do not damage the hole that the core goes into.

Thanks for the advice but I'm not actually sure if I'm losing water from the core plug.

I said I may be but I'm not sure. I asked if it looked like I was and whether it looked like a seal a around the core plug was coming loose in the images.

What about a good wash down of the engine with degreaser and then start looking? May be the cam cover gasket or the O ring by the coil packs.

That's a negligible leak from the cam cover, they are notorious for weeping from there. You might not improve it by fitting a new seal ;)
I don't recall anyone posting having replaced a core plug on here.
Good advice on washing down and observing.
