Hi - New to the forum. Just bought a 1998 Ducato Motorhome with 1.9 Diesel engine. Want to change engine and gearbox oils. Advice would be much appreciated.

Oil Filter is easy to get to - There is a cylinder behinnd it - hold this in place as you remove if the filter is tight. This is the cooler, and it held in place by two tabs of metal. Don't forget when refitting filter to fill and wipe a little oil around the seal.

Oil is basic diesel oil on this one (98) - newer ones are synthetic, but you are fine on the basic!!

Gearbox comes out of the drain on this model, and in through the sensor. 2.5l is average IIRC. Put some of the old into a jar and leave to settle - just to see if you have water in.

Your next job is to locate the scuttle drain, which will be a rubber pipe that ends just above your gearbox - extend and relocate BEHIND the gearbox. Design fault in these meant this dumped scuttle water on top of the gearbox. Water would ingress through the mounting and fill the gearbox. This ended up, chewing up speedo drives and popping gearboxes, usually hard to get into 2nd/Reverse and show a flickering speedo. Obviously motor homes were especially prone due to the design.

When you service - check brake pipes where they attach to the bulk head. Go from the reservoir down the pipe and you will see a plastic clip attaching to bulkhead. Pop the pies out of the clip if possible and keep this clean. It is a dirt trap, rots the pipe and if very difficult to see any damage until your brakes stop working! :D
