Can any one help my laptop cd drive has stopped reading any type of media ?!?
I have reinstalled the driver for it the light on the side flashes but nothing reads ?
Is it possiblr to replace the drive in laptop ???
Cheers Adz

Yes it is possible and most of them are a universal fit. They usually just have different brackets screwed to the sides. Some laptops even have a single screw in the base that when removed releases the CD drive.

Is the CD drive present in 'My Computer' and the BIOS?

if u are able to remove the drive usually the screw is hidden somwhere on the bottom in the RAM compartment and just take this out and usually a lever to push drive out check connections on drive, run laptop without drive in and then reinstall drive (laptop off of course) and then try to see if it works sometimes can just be a connection problem.

some newer laptop drives are fixed so be aware, this might be manufacturer job if it is.

What make and Model is it?

I've replaced the DVD-burner in Bunny's Sony Vaio. Was quite a pain with the number of screws to remove to open it up.. Slimline drives they're called. Standard mini-IDE interface means you can pretty much use any make of drive.

As said above, what make and model laptop do you have, and what make and model CD-DRIVE do you get in the hardware manager screen.. on XP.. Right click my computer, manage, then Device Manager, DVD/CD-ROM Devices.

Eh?

P.s lauren i know it was urs lol:p

ok, in that situation perhaps buying an external CD burner might be a better choice. Granted you can't burn CDs on the move, but then again you probably don't anyway given how much battery a laptop will use while burning a CD!

Probably cheaper than buying a replacement slimline CDRW/DVD-R combo drive.

Edit... not quite cheaper - but is it worth the hassle of taking the laptop apart for the sake of £6? Especially as the drive is reading CD/DVD ok.

Which one? The external (first link) just plugs into a USB2 port. Job done.

This company (CCL) is one of the cheapest for parts on the net. Better than that is the people who work there are actually helpful. (y) They have a forum where you can speak to the people who work there.
