Hi,

I need a new cat for my cinq, but there appears to be two possible types.

My car's a '93 899, 170AF 53A, which I think is an 'i.e. S'.

It's engine code is 1170 A1 046.

Any tips on choosing the cat?

Euro Car Parts list two, but can't confirm which is right, and there seems to be a few ebay sellers, with different ones.

Does it matter anyway, with a 4cc difference in engine size?

Cheers, Pete

I'm sure the 899 is a smaller bore than the 1108 exhaust, plus pipework leading up to the CAT is different so you'll need to go for the 899 part.

Klarius and Euro.flo only list one part number for an 899 so not sure why Euros list two. Only imagine it's a choice of quality (some Euros stuff is really rubbish, I deal with them A LOT).

Euro.flo part number is ECFT1003 if that helps.

thanks duncan.

Are the sixty quid ebay cats any good?

Specifically, EEC, or BM Catalysts

Cheers

Couldn't honestly say but there will only be a handful of people making Cinq cats so you'll probably find they are all pretty much the same no matter where they come from. The Euro Car Parts cat will probably fine.

I would say that buying one from a motor factor rather than online means that it's much easier to sort out any problems or warranty claims, should you need to.

Don't forget gaskets either!

How will they know if the cat is present.....????
1993 specs are so low, any car in good mechanical shape will pass any test......cat or no cat....

No it won't.
It will fail a UK MOT is the Cat doesn't work.

So exactely what does it do in a 1993 car..?

But anyone willing to spend a fortune on a 21 year old car....go ahead.
The cost of a new cat wil be higher tan the value of the complete car imo.

Your not understanding.. In the UK any car after 1992 has to have a CAT to pass an MOT regardless of what emissions come out of the tailpipe - it not being there is an automatic fail. This is because here it was a legal requirement for all new cars sold to have a CAT from then, so a 1993 car has to have one to pass. The emissions limits are also much stricter after 1992, although you are not wrong that a well running cinq would pass without one more than likely but it would probably be close even so.

i'd just go to scrappy and get one
:yeahthat: that is exactly what i would do. although cinqs are getting hard to find in scrappies, or they are in ones i go in anyway.

That's what I'm saying......the catalyst is present, there's just nothing inside....!!!
Anyway, European laws demand a cat in al post 92 cars in Europe, thats why cat replacements are offered by tuning specialists...
I've done this with many cars untill recent, works fine evey time, sometimes close, but it passes emissions, and that's what counts.
It will work as long as a car has 1 O2 sensor in front of the cat.
On newer versions with 2 sensors , one after the cat, it doesn't work of course!

1-2% of our MOT's are by law inspected again by government testers.
One of my fake cat equiped cars was once tested that way, and came through without problems, since than, I don't worrie about working catalysts anymore.

My Cat needs to be hot to pass, even with specific 1994 figures.
Cold Cat would fail every time. So no Cat at all would also clearly fail!!
