anyone got any good web sites for a basic carputer setup?

@ PRF - Are you new to the forum, havent spotted your name before?

Have you got a carputer?

Daz

whats the basic setup i need besides
Inverter
very midi tower
motherboard
psu
HDD
sound card
Screen

Pete

g-fix card, relay (or switch to turn it on) and something to control it...

Daz

pick the right MoBo and you'll get a basic graphics chipset and 5.1 surround, then you just need psu, cpu, ram, hdd, cd/dvd drive and cooling.
a usb hub in the front comes in handy for keyboard and mouse and anything else you might occasionally connect (phone, camera, minidisk etc..).
If running an inverter it's a good idea to have a switch in the +ve feed (or relay)somewhere in the front so you don't have to open the boot to turn it off/on evrytime.

If ever you hear thunka-thunka-thunka from your front wheel, pull over; you may well find you have only two wheel nuts left and both of those are probably loose! Not that that has ever happened to me, honest!

sorry MoBo?
can i touch screen be used so u dont need mouse and keyboard
Pete

ah i c mother board
Case? or can u make ur own
how much in all exept 4 the screen?
Pete

i got a touch screen, but keep a keyboard and mouse handy for if i ever play with settings or to type in track listings on cd's I've copied etc..
cheap route off the top of my head...
case £15
MoBo £35
cpu £40 (would get you and athlon 1800 xp ish)
256 mb ram £40
dvd/cd combo drive with cdr functionality £35
usb header £5
keyboard/mouse £10
sundry cables (pc internals) £5
inverter £30
40gb hdd £35

£250

or just buy an older machine out of the local paper if you want really cheap, and whack a bigger hdd in it. You don't really need a fast cpu or lots of ram to play tunes and dvd's (dvd's require at least 400MHz cpu)

I'll get some proper prices in a mo

where do you put it? I take it the idea of carputers is to play mp3's through the rest of your ice? Also, i saw on someones HU screen, an ie window. I wonder if you could use a wifi lan, outside your house, and update your music etc remotely?

mine is a shuttle pc in the boot with front mounted touch panel, might have been mine you saw, i posted a pic of my screen with this forum on it.
It's wirelessly networked to my house although i'm running a cable to my garage to plug into it for faster transfer speeds and so i can plug the puter into the mains and avoid battery drain.

got some prices for you pete

WOW!
well searched chap, Cheers. the more i look into this the more i want it, its just the price of the screen puttin me of
How necessary is a touch screen, i guess it makes it a hell of a lot easier.
Cheers for all teh help
Pete

np :) that was all from http://www.ebuyer.co.uk btw

touch screen is a joy to use, with the right program it's just the same as putting your hand out to control a stereo. It's also cool :)
If you don't have 1, I guess you have to queue up some tracks for the journey before hand, set the volume etc using keyboard and mouse. Doesn't give you much option for changing things once underway.

Cheers for all that Jayfish sat nav is the extra i fancy for now(about £100), cant find OBD for a fiat.

Pete

For sat nav get the USB dongle one on E-bay, got mine for £35 and it works a treat with the right software...

Daz

and you don't need to worry about the ODB, just plug it into your carputer via USB...

Daz

how does it get the readings from the engine tho?
Pete
