Hi :)
After having seen lots of threads about polishing/waxing, etc I started thinking- what is so bad about only using Car shampoo?
it still looks shiny to me?

oh and another question! what is the difference between wax and polish, and if you use both, which do you use first?
Oh and how often do you use each?

I was thinking about buying NXT car wash, and Duragloss aquawax
thanks.

car sampoo does not get rid of the imperfections alone for a start. Polish brings out the shine of the paint and helps reduce imperfections in the paint either by removing them (cutting) or filling them in (using fillers), Wax on the other hand protects the shine of the paint so it looks like that longer and helps push or "bead" water away from the paint, wash-->clay(removes further imperfections-->polish-->wax

polish reasonbly regularly personally
wax 2-3months depending on wax im using at the time and normally top it up with a more liquid wax such as AG aqua Wax
alot of polish and wax/sealant though is dependent on personal choice

Hi Jam and welcome to the Forum

Right to answer your questions...

what is so bad about only using Car shampoo?

A car shampoo only cleans the surface of the paint and offers it no protection

it still looks shiny to me?

there is shiny and there is shiny ;)

what is the difference between wax and polish, and if you use both, which do you use first?

A polish contains abrasives and is used to prepare the paint for wax a wax gives protection

Oh and how often do you use each?

depends on what you use and how many miles you do in the car and where you park it...

NXT isn't a bad product but is rather expensive

no experience of Duragloss Aqua wax but its a similar product to autoglym aqua wax

which is Ok to top up a well cared for car but ideally the paint needs to be well looked after to start with

This is from a PM i sent another member

t all depends how you want to go about it if the paint is still in good condition its relatively easy if not a little work will be involved...

take a look at the car (in sun light if possible) if it looks like this

(picture by Dave KG of detailing world)

you are going to need to give it some more TLC...

you ideally want some kind of Pre wash either a Foam lance (if you have a pressure washer) look in the members group buy

I use Bilt hamber foam not the stuff sold in the group buy

If you don't have a pressure washer you can get something like the Super spray

just don't expect the foam like consistency if you get one of these i'd just use normal cheap car shampoo

right first off have a read of this

http://www.detailingworld.co.uk/foru...ead.php?t=4637

Now i don't use grit guards they seem bloody expensive for what looks like a plastic drain cover...

i do use 2 buckets (cheap £1 builders buckets one pink and a yellow one ((hence they were cheap)) in one i put the shampoo solution and the other clean water (as above)

now for wash mitt here in gods own country (yorkshire ) we have a "department" store chain called Boyes http://www.boyes.co.uk/

i get my wash mits from there

they are only £1.99 and sell for £3-4 on most of the car care web sites you can spend more but the good thing with the cheap ones is that when they get to the point of been filthy you just chuck it away and start a fresh...

once washed (as per above guide)

rinse the car off well with a running hose (no spray gun or nozzle required)

then onto dry i'd avoid those Water blades i just use a large microfiber cloth and (optional Quick detail spray)

now for clay polish wax and the rest...

once the car is clean (this i do every 3-4 months ish)

first clay i use Bilt hamber clay (soft) it only needs water to lube rather than quick detail spray...

http://www.detailingworld.co.uk/foru...ead.php?t=4829

(you need the car clean)

when you use it you ONLY need light finger pressure..
and plenty of water

then re wash and dry the car (no quick detailer this time)

now the iffernal what next
paint clenser?
Polish?
Wax?
Synthetic sealent?

basically
Paint clenser is a none abrasive solvent based cleaner,
polish is an abbrasive compound,
wax is a predominanty natural product which gives shine and seals the paintwork,
Synthetic sealent is a chemical sealent,

this is where the confusion sets in

without going into too much detail

my 2 favourite options at the moment

are

Autoglym super resin polish
topped with 2 coats of collinite 915, 24 hours apart (ideal if your car needs a polish) and the collinite lasts an age and beads water very well

Or Bilt hamber Auto balm

this is a paint cleanser "filler and sealant all in one
