Could something have got sucked into the inlet, is it worth taking it off to check.

How can I do a compression test. As I have checked my water levels for cooling system and it was full more then I remember it and not bits in the water or nothing so not to sure

Thank you

you are clutching at straws..!!

what did the garage actually say..??
they may well have done a compression test - and ruled out HG or general compression issues:rolleyes:

They told me that they've done checks and that I need to take it to a Fiat dealer as it's the ecu that need replacing.
Was the closest garage for me to get to.

I took it there as just wanted to get it fixed but just so confused on what but actually is would rather do the diagnostics my self.

What has been done since the problem
- new spark plugs
- new HT leads
- Coil packs have been switched to determine if the coil had gone and misfire would move however it was still on cylinder one

So don't know how to go about diagnosing what it could be

you paid £50 for investigative work,
ask them what they tested,;)

did they actually give you a written quote for the fixes required..??

No just told me what I already knew and told me to go to a Fiat dealership to get a new ecu :/

Go back to the garage and ask them why they are telling you it is an ecu problem and how they have worked out it is not a compression problem.

Alternatively buy a cheap compression tester and google how to use it or if you are unable to do that get somebody to help you.

Ideally you should get a compression tester that screws into the spark plug hole and for that you will need to be supplied with adapters for different spark plug holes. A complete testing set up is not expensive these days.

I am a miserable bastard and dont have any friends with a compression tester but most people are not in that situation.

ECU faults are NOT that common,
we see this time and again on the forum,:( where people spend 500/£600 on a new ECU replacement - then the same thing happens 2 or 3 days later)

it's generally a wiring issue ..so the ECU doesn't see a signal,

get to the bottom of IF YOU HAVE A SPARK AT #1 CYLINDER

I've just had the same issue on my HGT. Occasional cycl1 misfire, juddering, vibrating on idle and cutting out.

Turns out the wiring loom where the injectors and spark leads junction had a bad earth.

Get someone to monitor the dash whilst you wriggle the wiring see if it causes any dash lights to flicker.

Since its picking up ONLY cylinder 1 as been at fault
I'd be inclined to steer away from a new engine ECU

Why?
When the ecu's fail on these - they fail on a driver for the coil
1 coil not firing kills 2 cylinders on the 8v'

You need to assertain why it think cyl1 is missing

Lack of fuel? - injector / wiring issues?
Lack of compression? = Worn bore or piston / burnt valves - blown head?
Lack of air ? = something got sucked into the inlet by accident?
Lack of spark = Duff HT / Spark / dying coil that failing on 1 side?

Hi Ziggy
My car is doing the exact same thing.
Only codes are po300 and po304. Had new coils leads plugs, was fine for 50 mule or so. Then misfiring and no power and terrible on fuel.
Checked engine compression, all cylinders at 14 bar.
Checked spray of injectors, all fine there
Checked all wiring from ecu plugs to sensors, pin to pin with a power probe.
All is fine woth wires.

My gearbox mounts were extremely worn for about a month jumpin and knockin about, plus how i deive doesnt help.

I was thinking i might have wrecked my ecu as its bolted to throttle body and the vibrations from mounts jumpin and banging. I was thinking the driver for the coil failed in the ecu but what ur saying counteracts that.

Aside from buying a costly oscillisope i dont know what to do.

Any advice?
Thanks, Connor
