Hey Peeps,

Just got home, the rev on the car been hunting all day. And tonight when i went for a drive, head lights on. After 10 mins of driving all the light gradually got dimmer and dimmer. Then engine management light then the car died with no pwoer can;t even restart it.

manage to get it home with a booster pack every 2 miles or so.

I have just cleaned the 3 earths again. Before this happened I have used general purpose grease on them, and brother said that could cause a problem.

So What could cause this? dodgy afternator or battery?

thanks

More likely dodgy alternator.

Does the ignition light come on when the ignition is in pos 1?

Cheers

Should add, Got 2 battery both seems dead. one read 0v even when the charger is on it. One read 10v, even when the charger is on it.

The one that was on when i was driving is the one that gave 0v. No ignition light after it died.

The battery with 10v, yup got the iginition light/management light but not enough juice to spark it on!

Sorry for the Friday night bombandment!

When i started the car using the booster pack with the fooked battery, should it still give a reading of 13.8v ???

If it doesn't then does that mean is the alternator?

Thanks

Slow down.

The battery will have taken a beating. It will actually recover itself even off the charger, the lead and acid make electricity.

It might get its volts back, but the amps are another matter.

The alternator should always give around 13.8 volts with th engine running.

If your battery has been boiled it is possible that the alternator is running far higher than 13.8.

Its been boiled over using the charger not when it is in the car.

How do you check the output of an alternator? Through the battery ?

Would it be possible that the battery hold 0 charge and meaning the power from the alternator is not getting to the car at all ? (I was using the 0v battery when the car died)

I think tomorrow, i will start it with the battery giving the 12.5 v and hope with the engine running it will give the expected 13.8!

Thanks

The battery seems, fine i swapped it to the other cinq, and it is giving a value of 14.14 (that's not too high is it?).

Not sure if there is anything i can do, as the alternator is brand new?

thanks

Trip to Rallycinq's place answered my questions :).

The battery light wire is not working, so it is not charging the battery on start up unless you give it rev.

So reved the car, check the voltage it gives 14v which is rather nice!

Really happy now :).

Thanks D
