wrt the bolt head, the head of the bolt should be closer to the front of the car. From the engine bay, you would be looking at the nut. Sorry for the poor quality of the image, but you can still readily see the direction the bolt(s) are aligned.

The other image is from the 126 manual of the hand brake lever which shows the orientation of the parts.

Huh, the sleeve shows up in the manual, too. I just don't have 'em on my car...

A busy day...
Completed the rear suspension - thanks for your advice - bolts round the right way now....handbrake working - car back on its wheels.

Installed new modified wiring loom and stripped out the interior.....hot work!

Removing all interior works has given me many tasks to do, but I'm up for the mission.
Pedal box out - steering tube out - dash out.......cable and petrol pipe replacement underway.

Where do I get a rear firewall cover for under the rear window.....mines incredibly tired??
 
Steve - did you cut away any part of the dash steelwork to fit your pod? The L dash pod sits in some right angle brackets....

I will need new knee pads and am un-decided whether to keep black plastic dash covering or go for blue painted...

Wife thinks the contrast of black plastic would look best

Does anyone know the correct colour name for the dark blue my car is painted please?

The dash I bought was designed for the L so mounts around the dash and is deeper than some, so no cutting of the recess was required for the gauges. I wanted to keep the lower section to mount the dash to with the intention of cutting away the rest as it protrudes slight past new dash in a few places. This would be no problem if I was keeping the L vinyl cover.

I even got to the point of buying some new spot weld cutters, but in the end I decided to leave it in situ.

Are the rear wheels meant to take a humerous camber angle when car is on the ground without power unit in?

Do I strip the floor internals of old sound proofing insulation and paint or underseal and put the carpet trim back over? Whats the perceived wisdom please
 
Hi Andrew yes to the first question re camber.

I can't see the point of removing the sound proofing it's there to help stop the road noise. It's a bit like the headlining, it's actually a sound deadening panel.

All I did was rub back any corrosion, there wasn't a great deal, wacked some red oxide on it and the sprayed over it with some black anti chip paint that gives a slightly rubbery finish, similar to the engine bay finish but not as pronounced. Carpet back in Job done.

That camber angle prevails even when the engine is fitted but without it, the car does look very odd...so normal.:)

Your car doesn't seem to have been ravaged by body restoration to the extent that many of our cars have been. If you mean that factory-applied, bituminous layer in the seat and foot-wells; if it is intact and not hiding moisture or rust, I would leave it.

I suspect that there is quite a contingent here who would want rid of it, but it does add some solidity, anti-drumming and sound-proofing to the floor.
 
You can answer your own question on the floor by giving it a go. Quarter of the way through you'll be thinking "wish I never started this!". Keep it, it's there for a purpose. Your going to need it with your fire throwing engine!

It is a pretty severe camber without the engine and gearbox in. I have them out too at the moment, along with the surprisingly heavy doors off. It makes it super easy to roll it in and out of the garage. ;) ;)

As for the floor pan sealant, I'm leaving mine as is, as it's all intact and everything is very sound.

I have received the air box cover back from my machine shop - I had modified for the throttle assembly pivot for my Dellortto FZD......looks the part

Had another issue to deal with.
When I collected car i noticed that there was some damage to the column.

I was confused as to what it was - as the ignition key sits in the centre of the dash................?

So I bought a second hand replacement but it has an ignition switch with terminals on the back.............do I just remove the rear of the switch and blank it off?
The steering lock now works but I'm confused.
Do you enter the car - insert key 1 into steering lock and disengage and then put key 2 into ignition switch and start car with pull lever??

I don't think you are supposed to have the steering lock on an F.
The F had the ignition switch in the centre of the dash.
The L has the steering lock with ignition on the same switch.
Maybe you could have 2 keys. 1 for the steering lock & 1 for the ignition.
 
The later "F"s did have the ignition lock fitted. Your car seems likely to be worth protecting with steering lock so it would be an easy job to divert the cables from the dash centre location to the column lock. Then you will need the plastic blanking plate for the original lock location.

Either way, with the originally fitted starter, you would use the starting lever once the ignition light is on.
 
mine is an L
it had the broken lock housing and a column with the lock indent in it.....AND a key in the centre of the dash......three keys AND a lever to enter car and start it is real classic motoring
My BMW doesn't even have key....;)

I suspect at some point an owner lost/broke the keys and took the easy route of removing the steering lock and inserting an ignition switch into the blanked hole in the dash. I've seen a number of L's, including mine, where this has happened.
