'99 T Punto 1.2S 77k, which we've had from 10k/1year old.

We decided to sell it when the missus suffered 2 rear end shunts in a week, meaning it had to go to the menders. After shunt 2 she vowed never to get in the car again. Before it was collected I reversed it up to the garage door, as the boot wasn't secure. The menders duly collected it, fixed it & dropped it off yesterday - I watched the guy reverse it off the truck.

When I come to reposition it on the drive I find I can't engage reverse  it's like there's something stopping the gear lever going all the way. All the forward gears engage just fine. I checked the Haynes, suspecting a cable adjustment issue, but this model has the hydraulic flavour - no adjustment.

Does this sound like a clutch or gearbox problem? Bearing in mind it had a new gearbox & clutch around 2 years ago. What sort of a repair bill am I looking at here to make it saleable? Clutch & gearbox are beyond my DIY skills.

TIA

There's a reverse inhibitor cable going to the 'box that operates when you push the stick down and that lets you engage reverse. It attaches to a wee lever toward the back of the 'box, get someone to sit in the car pushing the stick down and see if it moves. If it doesn't, the cable is probably broke.

Hmmmm, I've never had to push down to engage reverse on this car, it's just straight down.

Just tried it... it works!

I feel like a right d*ck! I don't drive it often & have never conciously pushed the stick down, I think because I'm tallish there's always been downward pressure when I engaged it.

Anyway - thanks to this forum it's errm fixed!
