General Can you claim tax back when selling to a dealer?

My tax runs out in 5 days and I may have found a Bravo that I wont be able to collect for 6 days :bang:

Can you claim the tax back or is it just tough and the dealer benefits? Does the dealer care if they buy a car that has tax on it? Otherwise I would have to spend £140 on a 6 month tax disc for 1 day!

just see if they can swap it a day early, you will be able to claim the £140 back but even for that one day it would be less an entire month...I think

Cash tax in and run it down without tax. Likelihood of getting caught is slim tbh as policy systems won't be updated that quickly I suspect.

I dont want to second guess what the police systems will say to be honest as I have no idea. The dealers is around 40miles away with motorway and town driving so I wouldnt want to risk it.

I wasnt sure if I could cash it in as when I hand over the V5 the car become theirs along with the tax disc. Even if I retained it and sent the tax disc away the day after wouldnt the refund go to the new owner, i.e. the dealer?

See if the dealer would be willing to put a 6 month disc on the new car; if so buy it to be on the safe side. You might get away with it, but I wouldn't chance it either. That way you're not losing out as you'll be getting a 6month disc either way.

Yes, you can get your tax back, just take the disc out of the car before you hand over the keys, you paid for it so you're entitled to a refund.

No road tax is an £80 fine, so do you take a chance or pay the tax . . . .
(The DVLA fine will land on your door after a 14day period of tax expiry, so I've been told)

Or do what i did and just drop the car off early.

Or if the new car comes with tax then it's no loss in a fashion.

It is a loss if I would have got tax anyway. Plus my 6months is £140 compared to £70 for the Bravo.
If I take the disc with me then will they refund me for that at whatever address I chose rather than the registered keepers address?

Can you drop the car off at theirs a day early? When I traded in my Bravo I took the tax disc out, it had 5 months left on it. Bloody pain the ass trying to get a refund though from the DVLA. I thought you just went to the post office and they gave you the cash. You have to fill in a form and send it off, heard back from them 8 weeks later that I apparently didn't fill in the correct part of the form (I did) but could not prove it so in the end left it. I would not want anyone to have to go through that hassle. Also I read somewhere that you have a few days after the tax disc has run out to get a new one so I don't think you would get in trouble if stopped by the police but not 100% sure on that everyone seems to have different opionons

I think thats for displaying it. You are allowed a few days grace for not showing a tax disc but I didnt think that was for buying one.

There maybe a possibility of dropping of the day before but then it raises questions with the dealer and didnt want to tell them that it wont have tax plus its an absolute pain in the bum to try and get back home. Would they actually care whether a car is taxed or not?

No as soon as logbook is handed over you can't claim tax van. Hence why it needs to be done before.

So you are saying that I cant claim it back and the neither can the dealer which means there is nothing in it to barter with i.e. you have my tax so I want 6months on mine. To be honest I would expect 6 months anyway so its still not really a gain.

Getting caught isnt just £80 now, its vehicle immobilisation or confiscation, Ive seen it on those TV programmes where the vehicle has a big yellow sticker saying NO TAX, NO CAR.

Only if cought by the DVLA at a DVLA check, The police just report you

And I've never seen one of them except for on TV and I do 20k a year all over the country.

And like I say your car on their ANPR systems will still be on the system as taxed until they receive it, even if it's sent the day before you'll be ok. The thing you need to make sure is that the tax is receive by them before the logbook notifying them of change of owner. Once you've ben deregistered as owner you can't claim tax back, and you can't if its registered in trade (like when sitting on a forecourt).

Can't remember exactly, think she got the new car in July, had a letter from DVLA saying refund is being processed a little while ago, just waiting for the cheque.

Anyway, an excerpt from the refund form:

You will not receive a refund unless one of the following applies:

You are the current or last registered keeper and:
• you have recently sold, transferred or exported the vehicle.
You should have already told DVLA by returning the relevant
section of the Registration Certificate (V5C). If you have not already
done this, please enclose the relevant section with this application.

You are the current registered keeper and:
• you are keeping the vehicle off the public road and you will not
tax it within the next 21 days. You must fill in section 3, or
• the vehicle has been scrapped by an Authorised Treatment
Facility, or
• you have changed the vehicle’s tax class to a nil value tax class
(such as ‘Disabled’), or
• the vehicle has been stolen and you have reported the theft to the Police

Great find, thanks. That should take the pressure off a bit. I may lose a months but never mind. If a dealer cant apply for a refund then I guess they wont care if I do this and they miss out.

I would say to phone the DVLA & check if you really need to re-tax for just one day, but they may well mis-inform you judging by what i've heard on here. They will probably say you don't have to but that 'the car must not be used on a public road until a license is purchased'. Then it's upto you whether you wanna chance using it that once or not.

If you do decide to tax it, check whether the 10% surcharge on 6 month discs gets refunded or whether DVLA keep that, as if they keep it it might be better to buy a 12 month disc as there's no surcharge on them & you'll get 11 complete months back.

For the refund, you'll need to pick up a V14 form, available at some Post Offices or your nearest DVLA Local Office http://www.dft.gov.uk/dvla/contactus/localoffices/findnear/england.aspx

Once you've handed over your car to the dealer, glue your tax disc to the V14 form & send it to DVLA Swansea with the relevant part of the V5C Registration Document (think it's the yellow slip 'Transfer/Sale to the Motor Trade'). Do NOT let the dealer send the slip from the log book as it is your responsibility as the Registered Keeper. I think the DVLA will send you a letter within a few weeks to confirm your'e no longer responsible for the vehicle, and the Refund of Tax Cheque should arrive shortly after.
