Hello!
Does anyone know if is it easy to connect a personal computer to the Body computer on the car?
I know it's possible with the correct software (on PC) and the correct connector, for example through a serial port (or USB) on the PC.
I had this idea because I went to a fiat assistance for a diagnosys: they connected the car to a PC and they analyzed car's parameters.
I like to manage electronic/mechanics, and I think it's very interesting to connect my PC on the car.
Let me know if someone has an idea!!!
Best regards,
Andrea.

afaik those pcs they use to analyse your car arent normal pcs they are specialised with special software for the job etc, so I doubt its just a case of connecting a pc to the ecu or whatever.

Re: ECUs, CAN Bus, Body computer & C.

Which model is your car?

If it's a Punto mrk2 i believe it uses an OBD-II (ISO) connector.
You can do a search on google for OBD (on-board diagnostic). ;)

I found this site which has some info:
http://www.scantool.net/
According to them, the Punto mrk2 and the Stilo uses OBD-II (ISO).

but i advice that you check out the site (y)

Thanks for the link,is there anyway of creating your own home built cable. my dad is very good at electronics and if we knew the type of cable etc we could do it. thanks

how can you make your own diagnostic equipement for a punto MK1 then?

Hello!
Very useful link!
Their apparatus, connectors and adapters are very useful in order to connect the car (with EOBD or OBD II) to a personal computer.
Maybe that objects are expensive...
I also found some other easier schmatics online which permit to connect PC and car, with less electronics on the adapter (only 3 transistors and small I.C.). I could post the schematics if there's the possibility to insert an attachment here in the forum.

I'm also searching for the software. There is some software for free on the website suggested above. But I'm confident to find also the original software from FIAT group.
I found some files on eMule. One of that was "corrupted", now I'm trying to download another (it's over 300 Mb).
And in the next week I'll try to assembly the cable with electronics needed.
I'll let you know if i discover something useful!
Andre.

OBD 1 as OBD 2 was introduced until late 1996,all these do is monitor the input sensors anyway.

There is additional hardware on examiner that will not be on your PC/Laptop,you can run the programme & do somethings but you can forget about keys & remapping.

Does anybody know on a punto mk2 8v were the physical location of the connector itself is please?

On my Punto mk2 JTD i think it's located in the same compartment as the fuses inside the car, down to the left of the steering wheel (the steering wheel is on the left side, so i don't know if its loacted in the same spot in the uk spec cars).

Hello!!!
I don't want to remap ECU or modify engine's power, or similar.
I think that's not a safe operation, and also I' m interested more in low consumption and low emission instead of power.
I like to run fast, I' d buy a more power engine, not a 1.2 8V!!!

However, I'm interested in this connection because I'd like to solve ECU, sensors problems by myself, because FIAT technicians are very very expensive.
I'm going also to put a GPL in the car, so I'd like to control engine's parameters during GPL alimnetation.
It's more couriosity than necessity!!!
Regards,
Andre.

I need to know if my car is OBD compliant (punto hgt w-2000)

everywhere i've searched doesnt have my car listed, some say that i should look at the 'D' type connector and see which contacts have a connector in them, i thought this would give the answer but instead of having 4 or so connections out of 16, there about 13!!!

fiat don't seem to know (or dont want me to know)

"IF" i had a copy of the smart examiner software, would it work with a generic OBD ISO interface?

them plugs are slightly different shape.... :(
also, remember that OBD2 only as to be used on cars sold in the US after 96?
in europe and the uk, i think fiat would only use obd2 when forced.

It Is Not Possible!!!!

I was going to download the software form Scantool.net website....
But there is a blank page wit written that the account is now SUSPENDED!!!!
I' m crazy about it!!
I started to build up the PC/car connector (with serial port, transistor etc) and now there's not the site with the software!!!!

I' m trying to download it from some other sources but without success...
Does anyone know the reason for that end of the website?
Andre.

Thanks Santa, but scantool website started to work again!
Then I downloaded that software.
I also built a electronical interface (different from the interface proposed by scantool.net). I connected it to the car without success: the software does'nt recognize the car.
Then I'll try to change some settings and I'll control cables and connections.

Did you used that software on a Mk2 punto?
Qhat type of interface between car and PC did you used?
Let me know if the scantool adapter is good working!
I could order it (only the circuit board) from the site: the board is something about 20 USD, and then I could put the electronical components and cables.
Let me know!
Thanks a lot from Italy,
cheers,
Andrea.

I haven't connected it to my Punto. :( I planned to put a computer in the car for music and gps, but i dropped the idea when i ordered a new stilo. (y)

I'm planning to put a computer in the stilo, and i'll most likely buy the interface from scantool for the diagnostics. It will how ever be a couple of moths before this happens (according to Fiat i can expect the delivery of my new car in late june or beginning of july :bang: ).
