Technical Can anyone tell what this is?

Can anyone please tell what this is? as today started my van after it's been sitting for a while, had to jump start it as battery was flat. But after starting I noticed a strong burning smell from the engine bay, when I looked I noticed that this thing was smoking and smelt like burning.

Looks like the windscreen wiper motor. do the windscreen wipers work?

Funny you say that, that was my first guess, and I realise now what as happened, my boys were in the van playing the other day, and I bet they switched them on, however I have an extension cable running across the windscreen probably stopping the wipers moving even though they are swicthed on. Thus causing the burning out smell.
All makes sense now, if that's what they are, will check first thing tomorrow when I can see what I'm doing lol

Just a quick update, checked the wipers and NO THEY DO NOT WORK? what as happened? is it just the fuse blown or the wiper motor packed in that's why it was smoking and smelling like burning lol
