Technical cambelt help

hi there guys, ive just changed the head gasket on my partners sei sporting, when it came time to change the cambelt i had a look at the old one and the teeth on it were broken (still attatched to the belt but all of the teeth could be folded back) instead of being solid blocks, i cant take a photo as i have misplaced it at the moment. i couldnt find any timing marks for the crankshaft so when i changed head i just left both the cam and crank in the same place then replaced belt, what im asking is could this have caused the belt to slip and therefore making the car unable to start?

Yes it could, correct procedure would be to fit the belt and then cycle the crank at least four times by hand to check the marks.

However, have you got your nipple in the right place?

There's a guide in the guides. The belts should be changed periodically, along with the tensioner. Probably just old age.

That is the correct timing mark. I would check if the timing lines up just now, if not refit. And make sure the crank pulley is on its nipple!

which nipple is this?

this may be why my engine isnt timing up properly...

Hole on ignition (alternator) pulley must line up (well, fit in, really) with nipple on cam pulley or the ignition timing will be well out.
