My old man has let his 1.4 16v Stilo get into some sorry state :(

Needs new disks and pads all round and all new wheel bearings!

Where is the best/cheapest place to get all of the above?
 
Generally with wheel bearing, you might able to hammer the bearing out but you to press them back in. So not really a job you could do all of it at your home.

But i'd expensive with doing all 4 wheel bearing it will be quite expensive at a garage.

If you could, i would remove all 4 hubs take it to a garage with all 4 bearing and ask them to press it in then refit everywith with new disc and pads. Is not that hard a job, but i don't think you are technical minded ?

Labour wise, find a good independent. Not sure what's available up north, but I'm sure there's somewhere that'll be decent. Rear brake changes can be a pain due to the winding back of the pistons - apparently a pain the proverbial to do on the Stilo (and probably new shape Bravo), as you need a "special" tool to do it. Going by when I got a quote from CM Garage in East Kilbride, they said they'd do all 4 disks and pads for £120 which is pretty competitive. I'd get bearings done at the same time as you'd maybe save on labour costs as well.

Be very carful when replace wheel bearing front and rear on the stilo the car has abs and the sensor ring on the bearings can easily get damaged if your heavy handed..iirc you can get the rear hubs complete with bearing already fitted from shop4 so that saves you quite a bit of grief on that one..the front are a different matter ..they need pressing in and out which will be costly..abs sensor ring also applies here as well so watch for that one if its D.I.Y..brakes and discs ..parts are readily available form many places but dont buy any cheapo's its not worth it..mintex/ebc/ are quite respectable and you can try euro car parts as well usually quite good on price..you can aslo try this one for a quote http://www.brakeparts.co.uk/ they are very good..the car is a 1.4 so the same parts are fitted to the 1.2 and 1.6 so that gives you some leway ..hope that helps a bit..Oh and if its gonna be done in a garage..take out a second mortgage..:hanged:

lol second mortagage, tbh am surprised all 4 wheel bearing needs to be changed. Is this a rally car?

Fronts are pretty tough so I understand but the rears are not so tough I also understand..for all the bearings to go at the same time he must have really neglected the car to a great extent..as you say Ming hubs can be taken to your friendly engineering company to get the bearings pressed in ..assembly then is quite straight forward ..just be careful all hubs are torqued down to the correct setting..
 
Yeah he just sees a car as a mode of transport that should just work!

He has had the car 3 years and not serviced it once!

He knows the basics about cars (it was him that showed me how to do my own brakes)

He did bearings a few times before on old cars but I presume things have moved on since an N reg primera? lol

For fitting - may get the grooved disc and EBC Greenstuff pad set off eBay for £190 delivered when I can afford it. Total for replacing all 4 discs and pads including labour would result in a £310 total. If I went for OEM stuff, could probably knock a £100 off that if not more.

Compared to somewhere like Arnold Clark, it's actually pretty decent. Given how painful the brakes on my Stilo look to work on (mainly the rears), I'd happily pay that. Think the original quote on the computer was £126 odd and he decided to make it an even £120. With CM though, sometimes it comes under the quote, which is always nice.
 
£120 is a huge amount for brake fitting,

he has all the correct tools and no doubt a lift for the car? so with no jacking up(simply raise on lift and remove wheel) and powered tools etc he could easily do the fronts in 20 to 25 minutes and the rears in just over 30 minutes. (we'll say 40 to be fair) on almost any car.

£120 for an hours labour? i''d tell the garage to take a very swift run and jump tbh. even if he was taking 2 hours (and he would really have to be taking his time IMO), 60 quid an hour is a touch pricey for an independent, not hugely excessive but pricey all the same.

garage down the road from me is £45 an hour and dont round up to a full hour if they went over, pretty sure they would take no more than £60-70 labour.
 
I'd say it is rather high for changing brakes mate.

Like all rear calipers , they all need to wind them back in! As long as the caliper is in working order then it doesn't take much effort. I'll have an universal tool, it worked so far o nthe honda and the alfa caliper.

Not seen the stilo so can;t really comment how hard is the job at the rear!

There is a guy infront of the CM garag called, gordon. Ask him for a quote and his work is amazing and he does all my welding for me.
