Hi All driving down the motor way before Christmas my Scudo 2.0 JTD came to a halt ,getting it back to the local garage they told me the cam belt is broken and the head needs to come off as it would have bent the valves, so i now have it at home as it is not worth the 2,200€ they quoted me for repairing!! my question is how hard is it to drop the engine? Has any one done it? any help would be appreciated

£2,200  they're 'avin a larf...... at your expense.

Seriously, it could easily add up depending on what's bent. Either way the cylinder head has to be removed so

The front part of the engine compartment can be removed entirely and the engine disconnected/pulled out on a trolley jack if you have the space to do it. It's not as straightforward as it sounds :)D) but this depends on your engineering skills.

If you can source a replacement COMPLETE engine (since most after-market versions don't come with ancillaries) the time taken to do an engine replacement is shorter, therefore cheaper, than a head-off/valve change job.

I can't be completely sure if your engine is but alot of the scudo range has weak cam followers meaning they break first before engine damage is done. If your lucky it will need some cam followers and belt replaced.

I have just taken the covers off and found its not the cam belt that broke but the bearing has self destructed!! so what do you think the chances are of it not doing any damage to the valves?? how can i Check

Only sure way to check is to do a compression test. Once the bearing is fixed that is....

Thanks for that does any one know where the timing marks are for to time the crank and cam?

yep Your right all 8 cam followers have broken but there's needles from the bearings in the head so i presume they could have got into the oilways!!! so possibly the engine needs stripping down???

Had something similar happen on a 406 with the belt and engine was full of neddles. So we uses a small magnet to get out as many as we could then dropped the oil and stuck a magnet inside the drain plug. It worked a treat we gave it a oil and filter flush every week and after the 3rd one there were no more needles
