the water pump/alternator belt broke:( doing 80ish on the outside lane of motorway! luckily still had power and managed to get off the motorway before the temp went right up.

the pulley seems to be out of alignment, not the alternator one but the one on the engine? i can wobble it with my hand.(n)

got recovered from bristol with RAC who did a great job(y)

there's water about under the bonnet so i don't know if the water pump failed or if the belt damaged a water pipe when it broke?

think the water pump probably failed or the pump pulley failed or the bolts came loose? i can wobble the pulley  need to find out where the water was coming from. it's emptied the water tank! if it's taken out a pipe or if it's the water pump itself.

the pulley seems to of come off:eek: so i expect the water pump somehow suddenly jammed, though can't get the pulley off to see exactly what's happened. can't get the pulley out at the moment though:eek::bang: going to have a look at it tomorrow.

well actually i'm pretty certain it's water pump and alternator? which would explain the temp so bit silly question.

the power steering pump is driven by a different belt?

Waterpump and Alternator on the belt driven from the crank...

hmmmmmmmm.....

the pulley for the water pump is still attached, but by one bolt!!

the pump still turns easily enough, as does the alternator! need to work out where the water went to! hopefully not headgasket, but i don't think it would of gone down so fast!

the water temp never went to the top of the gauge, but then if the water pump stopped then it would of been hotter in the block! oil temp didn't get too hot though.

going to phone up my mechanic and tell him about it, he does recovery as well so if i can't drive it to him, i'm sure he can pick it up. see what he says.:(

taken the 1 remaining bolt off the water pump pulley, and looked at the pulley which has smashed into the other pulley the crank one, so looks like both of these will need replacing!:(

water pump and alternator are both turning relatively easily though:confused: no leak from the water pump either:confused: how easily should the water pump turn?

i'm wondering if a bolt worked loose and caused the pulley to wobble before finally letting go shearing one of the bolts, dunno.

going to get someone to have a look at it, might be just a case of replacing the pulleys and belts if i'm lucky.

FECK! just seen the price for the driving pulley!! £181!

the later 3door 16v engines have a different pulley which is the same as a coupe, i'm wondering if i could file the damaged metal back into shape? if i can't find one off of a scrap car. so if anyone has a broken mk1 engine i'd be very interested!

yeah i had to swap all mine over when i swaped engines. cant remember if it was the mk1 or mk2 which has a thinner belt, but thats the only differents in the pully is the width
