I have just got broadband on the PC and am now gonna run a cable from my router to another PC. I know I need cat5 cable but is there a difference between cat5 and cat5e cable? cheers.

Thats 1000 megabits per second compared to 100 megabits per second. Both are massivly in excess of your internet connection which is likely to be around 2 megabits per second.

The limit for transmitting over Cat 5 is 100m. Over this distance and you start losing data. Cat 5 uses twisted pairs to shield the cable from electromagnetic interference meaning it can be ran along with power cables.

Ones sold from PC World for 10 quid plus are no better than the cheapest from places like Maplin. Ones with large 'boots' over the RJ45 connector can make plugging into ports difficult. Built in anti-snag protectors are a much better solution.

I bought my cat 5e RJ45s off eBay (y) No need to pay relatively stupid amounts from the high street
