Hi Janine,
that sounds awful..( and a money-making con!!),

We've always had our campers through the caravan club's Mayday / green flag scheme,
we've got the Swift Capri (Shorter Kon-tiki), and our mayday paperwork says NO max. Weight..,

we've been recovered many -a- time in our old Renault camper ( transit size), and they have been great ( annaul cover = cheaper than fuel saved..!!)

I'm sure the camping and caravan's scheme is similar,
but either use "local agents" as far as I'm aware, and recover you to a chosen destination.. some will take you to your holiday site..then return you home a week later..!!,
perfect peace of mind,

I hope that helps,
Charlie
